I purchased a 14 gauge steel insert for the console where I can lock up a pistol when we go into the mall. I also have a steel locking storage cabinet under the back seat big enough for an AR and some extras. Then I have a couple of steel plates attached to the console and the dash board and under the steering column with strong magnets that can hold a pistol or rifle in place. Keep them on the magnets when driving through a mob of peaceful protesters. Lock them up when you can't take them in the house like at a parking lot or school.

If you ever need to go to a GFS zone--and who doesn't eventually--you have to choose between: gun in vehicle or travel unarmed.

Locking a gun in the trunk is advertising to any attentive thug, that there's something to steal. A lock box fastened to the car might stop them. I take the approach of "they won't steal what they don't know is there". "No trash bags" was mentioned upthread. I put a double paper grocery bag full of cans wrappers paper etc in the car, and slide the pistol inbetween the bags and shove it under the dash with the expectation that they won't waste time on a bag of trash

Funny story from Thursday. I'm working in a real rough part of town and forced to park on the backside of the hospital. My buddy who was parallel parked directly behind me got smashed and grabbed. Turns out in this instance, the choice was made on him leaving stuff laying about vs. My vehicle showing nothing of value.
