Truthfully, I'm not a fan of breed-specific legislation. My daughter and I were just talking last night about one of her friends, who was walking his smallish dog when a large Siberian Husky ran up and attacked his dog. He fought off the Husky and rushed his dog to the vet. It happened in his apartment complex and the company initially paid the vet bill, but when they located the Husky's owner, they sued her and collected the money.

I agree that breed-specific legislation is an emotional response and actually detracts from the idea of legislating responsibility toward the owners of all dogs.

We talking about pits, or Chihuahuas? Never met a docile Chihuahua. Darned things are plain mean.

Yep, agreed. They go from 0 to 100 in a second. I was on an animal shelter board and spent thousands of hours around dogs. Some Pits are sweet hearts and some are plain scary. The only dog to really hurt me was a Lab. Broke my little finger and nearly severed it. Dogs are individuals and have to be judged as such. I cringe when I see parents let their kids get down face to face with strange dogs.

Please spay and neuter your dogs. Leave the breeding to the people who really know what they are doing. I have little doubt that Pit Bulls can be very aggressive. That characteristic is a part of their breeding that goes back many decades. That is one reason I buy pure breed dogs. I know what to expect from them. I know, people beat the drum to rescue a dog and save a life, but one is just getting a cast away and taking a shot in the dark on their personality and behavior. Many times they were abandon for good reasons and the owners were just too soft hearted or too cheap to have them put down. If you like to take in rescue dogs...good for you, but with small grandchildren who come around, I need a better chance of getting the characteristics I want.

I guess I didn't see that implied. I'm more took away from it that he was saying that there are some pitbull owners who willfully turn a blind eye to some of the aggressive tendencies and history of the breed.
A lot of folks nowadays think their pets and kids are angels and will defend them before all the facts are in...some even after all the facts are in!

Since my kids were little, we've had an assortment of mutts that were either strays that we took in or that we adopted from the shelter. The word rescue sounds funny to me, since it's not like I saved our dog from a burning building or something.

But, in all the dogs I've known in my life, I've seen no greater propensity for personality or health problems in mixed breed dogs over purebred dogs. Sure, you wouldn't want to go to the shelter for a quality bird dog or herding dog, but for love and companionship, I've been more than happy.

Perhaps you are correct. INGO history reveals that we have several who believe the breeds called put bulks are inherently evil. I'd be happy to know SMiller isn't one of them.

We have never had a dog from a breeder or a "pure bred" nor will we. All six that my wife and I have (or had) were either found or brought home from a shelter. Our deaf pit is so institutionalized that she won't go to the bathroom in the yard, only the concrete patio like she was used to for years. No one would adopt her because she looks like a "scary, mean pit". She is actually one of the sweetest dogs I've known. She is one of three "pits" we've had and while some had their issues , they were all overcome and became wonderful additions to the family.

There are parallels between gun ownership and dog ownership. Some people simply shouldn't have them.

Different strokes for different folks. When I read about breed characteristics and note my dog's behaviors, they are identical.

since my post in was in response to a post about pits, you decide.

I've met many a Chihuahua as well. Most of the ones I have met have been just as sweet as can be. There's always that 1 or 2, of ANY breed, that make them all look bad... damn, where have we heard that before.
