Thanks for the heads up on that. With that said, I have a few quick questions from someone new to carrying (me). First, do you have any suggestions / comments beyond what you just said with the expectation of media. Part B to that is what "kind" of media are we expecting? Reporters, etc, or some full-blown thing with cameras and the whole 9? Most importantly, are there any issues to carrying while there or should we come without? Thanks!

I'll let TFT report on the media aspect since this is his event. :)
In terms of Part B you can OC or CC at Cabela's with "no issues" (sometimes). Cabela's does have a sign at the front saying "firearms need to be checked in" but that is ONLY for firearms that you are returning, getting repaired, etc.

We have had members that have OC with no issues, talked to the staff at the front, talked to managers, looks at stuff, bought stuff, etc. We have also had some members who ran into issues (ie. told to cover up, told to put it in the car, etc) but this has not occured for a while now & suspect that it was more a training issue with some of the new employees.

They (Cabela's) do have a sign at the holsters that reminds LTCH to please NOT unholster their weapon to try on holsters and instead seek an assoicate for them. I think this is so they can have you unload the weapon at the front and then escort you back to the holsters to try them. Again I'm not sure.

POINT IS IF YOU OC/CC KEEP THE GUN IN THE HOLSTER UNLESS YOU HAVE TO USE IT (ie. FIRE IT).

Look forward to seeing you either OC, CC or non-carrying.:patriot:

I believe there will be some cameras there, but I'm not entirely sure. If you get interviewed, what you say is certainly up to you!

Thanks, that's what I figured, and I'm always carrying (CC) if possible / legal. Just wanted to make sure as I've dealt with media before and let's just say... I don't like the twist / mosquito aspect! More important than that, just don't want to give them any ammo... pun actually not intended

First special thanks to Guy R. from TFT for coming all the way to NWI to conduct this class. I know it's far for you instructors to come out to our neck of the woods and worry about being shoot in Gary or arrested in a Hammond Park.

    Again THANK YOU! :+1:

    --LOCATION--
-1 to Cabela's management team. I was never able to get in touch with the events coordinator and/or team even after repeated notes and phone calls to them. Something to remember the next time we (NWI) look for a venue I guess.

The facility was OK this time around unlike last time. Those chairs are hard on the behind after so many hours and the noise level is bordering on the loud when you have a birthday party on the other 1/2 of the room.

Line for lunch was a bit long but we all managed and had enough time (I think). Thus one of the reasons I tried like last time to have our food ordered ahead of time and/or ready to go. **sigh**

Plus this time we missed getting the 10% discount even thought we have a large enough group (19 people). But alas you live and learn right?

    --ATTENDANCE--
    We have 17 students + guy + his assistance/guest.
Of the 17, 16 heard about it from INGO or from someone on INGO. :yesway:
We have one person who got the info from the flyers that we distributed around the region. :rockwoot:and :noway: We must have passed out close to 700 flyers and only got 1 person! :dunno:

We had a member from the KODIAC gun range from South Bend as well. Neat!

Plus we have one member that had an eye owner experience when he learned that it's a no-no to carry into the USPS! THAT ALONE WAS A GOOD PRICE FOR THE COST OF HIS ADMISSION!

    --COURSE--
This was a refresher for me since I took the course back in 2009 (again at Cabela's when we got Guy to come out here the first time) and the presentation has changed to include the new 2011 laws that took effect in 01 JUL.

This time around my experience was not an eye opener as I'm an old hat now :( in terms of the ICs having read and discussed so much of them here on INGO for the last 2+ years. However there were a few new details that I did pick up that made me go "oh wow that I had wrong"!

    • 35-47-4-1can't sell/give/loan a firearm to a person that you know has a habit of getting drunk even if at the time of transfer the person is NOT drunk!
    • State v Washington (2010) giving LEO your LTCH and telling LEO you have a gun court then says LEO can NOT search your property (car/bags) WITHOUT probable cause.
    • Signs saying "no firearms allowed" carry no weight of law in Indiana UNLESS the say has text saying "you are denied entry onto property if you have a firearm" per the IC on criminal trespassing. (Not 99% of signs to not say "denied entry" in their text)
    • Barnes case has caused a huge whole in our rights in terms of using force to resist an arrest by LEOs be it if they come legal or illegally into your house. (See rambone's post on this one; search it)
    • Courts have added their own "law" on using self-defense in which they say "did you have a right to be there" which is NOT in IC
    • No self-defense case regarding curtulage yet
    • You can use reasonable force to do a citizen's arrest IF a felony has been committed (IS 35-41-3-3(a) which means you can point a firearm on someone to do a citizen's arrest as that IC has an exception for that but it best to have a witness and you be screaming "citizen's arrest!!!"
    • Intimidation is all about communication and it can be verbal or NON-verbal! So if you OC pees be sure to remain calm and cool ALWAYS! :)
And perhaps the biggest one and the one that I still have the most concern for me and every last one of us that carry as I have seen first hand (from some here in NWI) just how expensive it can be to defend yourself.

While there is an IC that "protects" you from a civil suit for self-defense YOU have to prove you used reasonable force to use force. So even if you are acquitted of criminal charges you can still get sued and you have to PROVE you were legally OK in doing what you did!

For this reason I'm now in the camp of get "self defense firearm insurance" and get it like NOW!!!!
Here is the research I did a few weeks back on this topic and who supplies this type of insurance for gun owners in Indiana.
    https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...insurance_for_when_you_carry.html#post2130921

I will be editing/adding some new stuff to these wallet FAQ as well since I picked up a few more "no no place" for where we can't carry guns that were not on the cards before.

Defiantly would have been worth full price, and was an absolute STEAL at 75$. Was quite an eye opener about some of those ICs too.

Despite what you may hear on INGO, you CANNOT use force to defend JUST property.
