I have read that it is a terrible shame that the island paradise will be destroyed by capitalism. There is just something cute and cuddly about people living under brutal communist dictators...

Cubans Display American Flags Ahead Of Obama's Historic Visit

Well, if anything, for the knuckle dragging bunch, the article has cool pictures.

Opposing the renewal of normal relations with the Castro regime is not anti cerebral. People who oppose it are not knuckle draggers for opposing it. That's just disingenuous. It's just ridiculing people who simply disagree with you. I kinda thought you were above that.

    S.E. of disorder
Im looking forward to a future vacation in Cuba, i know that.

I have been anticipating the same thing since having lived in Key West and south Florida for 3 years in the early '80's. One of the problems with that dream is that the infrastructure to support that American dream will not be in place for years. I read an interesting article on this topic a few weeks ago and little things like rooms, meals and transportation can't even be described as "spotty". Paying to sleep in peoples cars or on their porches are fairly common when those "confirmed" reservations just don't pan out. And if you're hoping to get there before the American Invasion ruins it for you, too late! That's already happened, once you get past the façade of clean modern hotels of which there is a limited availability the rest of the country is definitely third world; so be prepared for an adventure!

And while in those polished tourist areas you'll be interacting with SURPRISE! other Americans. And should you find some quaint unadulterated portion of Cuba that is untouched by imperialist greed or communist decay be prepared to pony up the bucks for something as simple as a photograph of the subject. It seems that they are learning the ways of capitalism a LOT faster than anyone anticipated.

So don't have some romantic notion of what you'll find when you get there, do your research, find and talk to those lucky ones that have already btdt and don't set your hopes too high and you just might discover a world that none of the rest of us have ever seen.

So, Castros die. Does America's new favorite vacation spot gets a new "democratic" US-backed puppet government put in place and the revolutionary cycle starts all over again?

Just think of all the shirts the dipstick leftists in this country would want of the the next che guevara type figure!

I'm gonna get in on that action. If I back the revolution I can cut a deal with the new leader and get exclusive marketing rights to his image.
    See! Capitalism works!

As long as we have a Gulf Coast, I'll take a pass on Cuba thank you.

No desire to visit a third world country and reward their past threats with my dollars.

I hold a very long grudge. Cuba threatened our lives and potentially those of the entire world playing games with nuclear weapons. Imagine someone in your neighborhood had threatened to injure a member of your family... would you go to a picnic at their house next week, next year, next decade, ever...?

Sorry for the people that suffer under this dictators rule but not my problem to solve.

That's the spirit, a lot will change with an attitude like that.

Actually, Cuba tried to keep "it" secret. We're the ones who actually made the threats. I don't it's even a debate as to why Cuba felt justified in having Soviet missiles on their soil.

What cracks me up in this debate is that USA is the ONLY county not allowed to visit. We act like Cuba is this hermit country, isolated from the world like DPRK. It is not. Europeans and Canadians have been choosing Cuba as a vacation destination since the early 90's, maybe longer.

Americans have, too, you just have to be circumspect.

Buy a Belize passport, which was about $500 US in the early 2000's. Fly to Belize or Mexico. Put your US passport in a bank box, take your Belize passport out of bank box. Fly to Cuba. Do the reverse to get back home. I learned about the process when I was working abroad.

It looks like Cuba has a travel advisory due to Zika virus at the moment, which to me is more concerning than the Cuban Missile Crisis on if I'd travel to Cuba or not today.

    Probably not exactly their choice.
Line up with the Soviets. Take their money. Sometimes there's strings attached.

Cuba was never a Soviet satellite. Castro nationalized American businesses after the Revolution (according to socialist beliefs), but he actually tried to warm relations, the best he could, and even made an official visit to the US, after the Revolution to mend fences. It's doubtful, in any capacity that could be productive, given the embarrassment to the US govt and the huge amounts of money lost; BUT he did give it lip service. He knew that it was better to be on neutral ground with your powerful neighbor, than openly hostile. And then the US funded the Bay of Pigs fiasco, and Castro who already paranoid about a possible full-scale US invasion, drew closer to the Soviets. Placing missiles in Cuba seemed like a good idea, but JFK, citing the Monroe Doctrine, would have nothing of it... yada, yada.... Missile Crisis.... yada, yada .... Armageddon avoided.... Soviets remove missiles, Cuba gets promise US will no longer attempt invasion, and (what many don't know) US removes missiles from Turkey.
