It's been well publicized that their government is using President Obama for (their) economic gain, and not at all for the reasons Pres. Obama chooses to illuminate. This is a bad joke that will cost American taxpayers many millions in spite of the fact that so many of us object to 'his important trip to Cuba.'

What's going to cost us millions? The actual trip?

Well that will cost millions by itself. Hell his vacation to HI cost how much? Something like 5 million just for transportation and security, then add in lodging and food/recreation/etc. But I'm just going to guess that he is not referring to that. How long until we start giving them cash, hell we already do to how many countries including China which hold how much of our debt?

Cuba was never a Soviet satellite. Castro nationalized American businesses after the Revolution (according to socialist beliefs), but he actually tried to warm relations, the best he could, and even made an official visit to the US, after the Revolution to mend fences.

    LOL....really..... "Nationalized American businesses...."

Did you write that with a straight face? Nationalized means stole. And not just American and other internationally owned businesses. They outright stole a very large number of businesses and properties (from fellow Cubans) and either imprisoned or killed the owners.

Castro's visit to the US was before he aligned himself with the USSR economically. It was after that visit that he 'nationalized' American businesses which is the reason for the embargo that stood until today.

As for not being a Soviet puppet, the USSR had to float the economy of Cuba for years after "The Revolution" and one of the strings of that support was letting them put missiles on the island. Hell, Castro wanted to keep the missiles and other weapons (not all of it was nuclear) to protect himself from another, potentially larger bay of Pigs.

I disagree with the title of the thread.

The original expression is, "Only Nixon could go to China".
Although there was also a reference to it in Star Trek about Captain Kirk being an envoy to the Klingons.
Both referred to the validation lent to a subject by the presence of someone fundamentally opposed.

President Obama going to Cuba? Not only is he not fundamentally against the subject, it actually seems like a bad sci-fy story.

I can agree "nationalized" means stole. That's exactly what Marx called for, so it's not exactly a newsflash that it occurred. And Cuba was never a puppet, at least so far as understood concerning other puppet states (ie East Germany, Poland). Whereas such nations answered to the Supreme Soviet, Cuba answered to no one but Castro.

I'm not sure I'm following why you're disgruntled. This isn't a vacation. This is a long overdue restoration of diplomatic relations.

I'll be curious to see what goes to Cuba first, figure to be reading about fast track authority for the Trans Caribbean Trade Deal in the future.
