Why should government workers be paid back pay when they return after a shut down? When I didn't show up for work, I was not paid.

There are 2 type of categories for .gov workers: essential and non-essential.
Those deemed essential even if the .gov shuts down will report to work on Monday and continue to do their job.
They will clock in as normal and do their 8 hour shift. However until the .gov "opens" again they will not be paid but will be due their wages for the work they continued to perform. Basically they are working 'under contract' and will be due money. Should congress not pay them they have legal footing to sue for payment.

The non-essential workers will report for 4 hours on the next biz day which in this case is Monday and will shut down all their stuff and then go home. They will not report back to work until the .gov opens again. It is this category of worker that congress may or may not pay for their time away from work depending on when the .gov opens up again. In prior .gov shutdowns, congress has paid this group anyways as they had no choice but to not work.

The next question I'm sure you will have it if they are 'non-essential' then why have them?
Non-essential is just the term used for those workers an agency has that do not focus on the agency's mission per say.
For example in the VA a .gov doctor is considered essential as you need a doctor at the VA. However the IT guy is not essential to keep a patient alive. He is non-esstential to the mission of the agency. But it is cheaper to hire an IT guy then it would be to contract out that IT work. Cheaper does not always mean money. It could be due to security reasons (ie. sensative files, etc..).
So while the VA could continue to run without the IT guy. Eventually you will need IT support.

Same concept with other agencies. Think the facilities people who maintain the building or HR people, or public relations, etc. Most of these functions do not focus on the agency mission but are support type which keeps the actual .gov worker going.

    Called their bluff.

It saddens me that our representatives will use US as pawns in their game, but we reap what we sow. I'm guessing there will be a lot of yelling and name calling, the Republicans will cave, and we'll kick the budget can down the road for another 9 years.

Well this will distract all the weekend news coverage from any mention of the FISA memo.

I am also sure that the politicians will deem it essential to stand in front of anything that looks like a camera and babble on about why they won't do their job.

There was some Dem congressman on tv. He said it wasn’t just the amnesty for illegals, they were going to insist on a whole list of social causes including more funding for abortion clinics.

Trump asked for a bipartisan effort, on NATIONAL TELEVISION, saying that he would sign ANYTHING that was brought to him with bipartisan support. The Republicans and Democrats brought him a bipartisan bill, and after speaking to Gobbels protege, Stephen Miller, Trump rejects the deal. So Trumpy lies, yet again, and the govt shuts down. It doesn't take rocket science to understand why the Democrats aren't willing to play ball right now.

That is an extremely simplistic take on those events.

Remember when democrats were wringing their hands kvetching about an imminent shutdown during the last administration? Remember the horror of seeing national parks being shut down? School kids starving? Grandma dying because her SS check was delayed? What a difference a change in administration makes...
I want that point made everwhere to everyone. It was so horrible for Republicans to shut the government down, but it’s just fine for them to do it.

Are we talking about something different than what happened yesterday? Cause this seems nothing like what I remember.

But that's not how the uninformed public will see it....neverminding the fact that a couple of GOP senators aren't onboard, as well. They'll go, "the Republicans hold the House, the Senate, and the White House, and the govt is shutting down why?" The president said that he would support ANY bipartisan deal that came to him. A bipartisan deal was made, presented to Trump, and he lied and rejected it. So now the Democrats aren't playing ball.

Five Democrats, including Donnelly, voted for the bill. So this was a bipartisan bill that was blocked by Schumer.

Better call Christo so he can drape the Washington Monument and other sights to keep the citizens from viewing them. Makes the fake cries so much more dramatic. Kind of like when they put fencing up around the WW2 monument and vets moved it out of the way. What they choose to shut down is all about political theater.

The real dangerous thing for the DC types is that they shut down the government and realize that most people don't care or notice, it's only THEY that care.

And of course, all federal employees risk having their paychecks delayed. Except Congress, naturally. Funny how they are insulated from every dumb thing they do. Shutdown, they still get paid. Hose SS, it's OK, they don't have to pay in. Pass Obamacare, but Congress is exempt.

    Notice a theme here?

I guess we have two posts running along.

No Military do no get paid I have went through this a couple of times 1995 and 2013.

If a person supports the military this “shutdown” has a human factor for the young families E-1 to E-5 and O1 and O2.
Most of them live paycheck to paycheck often the budget only has a couple of hundred or less left over.
The families are on two week cycle of pay so they typically purchase food pay bills every two weeks.
So at the end of the cycle many families only have a few meals left and very little money they do not make much to begin with.
If the pay does not hit the bank on the 1st it is a major issue up to children not having food.
So we have people in harms way that do not know if there kids will have food.
Let that soak in a bit.

Don't worry about the single guys and girls they eat in the mess hall and will scrap up money to buy cheap beer and party like they always do.
E6 and O3 and above should have a emergency fund and be ok for a month or so.

God bless Chuck Hagel the Secretary of Defense In 2013 he took funds from operational money and gave everyone a partial payment. He was the only enlisted person to become Sec of Defense two Purple Hearts ect.

Ah yes. The Schumer shutdown. I say we stage a protest at HNF and go in and hunt squirrels anyway.

Congress should have to pay back 3 days pay for every day the government is off line and it should be donated equally to all service members affected. And in that vein, they should receive no compensation unless and until they've achieved a budget that gets the US out of debt by 2030 or sooner. That means the sick and the lame get help making ends meet. The lazy should starve or be sent to Mexico in exchange for those hard working dreamers the dems are so enamored of. 1 for 1 swap of Democratic voters as I see it. Won't take long for the dreamers to change sides when they figure out the Dem's think they need to give up more of their hard earned $.

perhaps we can learn that if the Feds take a little break and it massively disrupts things, that means they are way too big and need to be reined in

I can't imagine any American over the age of forty who hasn't had that point hammered home many times over.

But, I'm over that, and I blame both sides. I blame them all the same, because for one, they are all equally involved and invested, and for for two, even if I did have a "side", I'd like to think I'd expect more from them than people seem to these days.

    What was the lie?

    From Jan 9th

"My positions are going to be what the people in this room come up with." "If they come to me with things I'm not in love with, I'm going to do it, because I respect them."

Those are the president's exact words, concerning a DACA/Immigration reform bill.
