I'm looking for something cheap, accurate, and fun to shoot. What's your favorite affordable .22 rifle?

The Ruger 10-22 seems to have a good reputation, and it's cheaper than the classic rifles that people seem crazy about: Marlin 39A, Henry Golden Boy, CZ 452 American, etc. Are there comparable rifles under $300?

    Thanks!

I rarely buy new guns so when I was at an auction I found a Remington 582 that I really liked. Got it pretty cheap and it is suppose to be a pretty accurate rifle. I have a good number more bolt guns than I do semi autos so I was plenty happy to go with a bolt gun over a semi. I need to slap a different scope on it because the one that is on it is kind of junk.

I ALMOST picked up a 10/22 but decided last week but decided not to. I've got access to one if I want to play with a semi .22 but it isn't something that I really feel the need to do very often. I'd say just look at reviews for whichever type of rifle you prefer...bolt or semi or lever and think about what you want to do with the rifle. If you want to play with it like a Lego set you might want to go with the 10/22.

if your looking for a basic good shooting .22 i would reccomend the mossberg 702, while it doesnt have the huge aftermarket following the ruger has, it can be had for around 120 new and i havent had a problem with mine. it has eaten everything i have put through it including some real junk that has jammed up a buddys 10/22. I do hope to acquire a 10/22 though, and at my local gun store they can be had (basic model) for 200 on sale. but for the cost i dont think you can beat the mossy

I have a Mossberg 802 that I love. It is a bolt action .22lr, and they have the 702 which is semiauto. I got mine for $119 new and I am more than happy with it. Obviously the Ruger 10/22 is great and you cannot go wrong with that. Also, if you have a Dunham's in your area they have a few deals on semiauto .22 rifles this week. Remmy 597 scoped combo for $165 and a Marlin model 64 for $145

Marlin 60's can be had at a pretty cheap price. They are pretty dang accurate as well. Has a tube magazine on it instead of a removable kind, but it holds 14 or 15 rounds, which is nice. It is definitely a great alternative to the 10/22 unless your going to tacti-cool your rifle. 10/22 has a MUCH larger following aftermarket-wise.

    I second this.

I just prefer box magazine fed rifles.

If you want cheap and fun just get a Marlin 795.

    :+1:

I have a set of Tech-Sights on mine and it really completes the rifle. Hitting an 18x30 steel target at 75-100 yards is a piece of cake.

There are three of these in my safe along side a 10/22
They are great little tack drivers. Usually can pick them up for $120 or less and they come with a 4x32 scope. Also, Marlin extended it $25 rebate program into 2011 so that brings you down to under a hunskey. The only issue I have is the mag release. I wish Marlin or someone would market and extension and machine the mag well so they drop free and easy like Ruger has with the 10/22.
If you like tube feds, the Marlin Model 60 is vitally the same rifle, though a little more expensive.

I have a Marlin 25n, A cheap walmart bought Savage Mark II and a Reminhgton 597. The Savage is by far the most accurate.

The only ammo that mine doesn't like is Agulera (however your spell it, as I can't). I haven't had any issues with mine except every 200 rounds or so I'll get a failure to eject if I'm using Remington ammo.
Other than that it's been a blast and you can find them on sale for right around $125.

Now that Walmart is back to selling long guns....It would be hard to beat a Ruger 10/22 for $197.00. That is the price at the Greenfield Walmart.

You guys are lucky. Up here Walmart has them for closer to $220. I'd probably pick one up at $197. Almost went for the $199 deal that Midwest had a week ago.

I love shooting ym Marlin bolt action 22. It eats and ammo you feed it, its super accurate, and it doesn't weigh anything! I have lots of semi auto stuff but for some reason all my .22 is either bolt action or single action. :D Well all except for my kids Marlin papoose.
