In my case, I hope to be able to maintain a reasonably healthy diet for months after the stores run out of food.
I will have the foods I want to eat, not just what I can find left over.

Unless you have an HOA that bans them, no one should ever run out of chicken or eggs. Get yourself a few hens and a rooster. Renewable food source. We had 1/16 of an acre in Indy and still managed to always have two dozen hens. $13 a bag for food at Rural King, and that lasts quite some time.

We have more eggs than we could ever eat and I do 30 male meat birds every summer. We sell most of the eggs to the supplier for a few restaurants in Morgantown, and cook a full chicken about every two weeks, then make stock and stew. They go a long way.

Stressed out hens don't lay tasty eggs. Nice, rich, dark yellow yolks are a good sign. That's also why store bought chicken doesn't taste good anymore.

Partly, the other is they eat tasteless feed. I once had a very old French cookbook, a chicken recipe began with feeding the chicken to taste good. Feeding berries was a big part of a tasty bird…

First year for me growing potato’s. Tried in a raised bed and in a 30gal drum. Neither produced much at all. Maybe 2lbs between the two. Filled a medium USPS box and that was it
