If one doesn't own a .44 Rem. Mag. or bigger caliber revolver then the 10mm might be a good alternative. Since I have a S&W 629 as a deer hunting handgun, I never felt the urge to start gearing up for a new caliber. I agree with Churchmouse that if I were going to get a 10mm, it would be in a 1911 platform and one made with forged, rather than cast slide and frame. Springfield Armory have always been high on my list of 1911's. I would also have to have a pistol with fully adjustable sights. Pretty much, the 10mm has come back as the latest fad. I think it is because the current younger generation of handgun owners have low opinions of revolvers.

It’s probably been said before, but 10mm is like a magnum round for semi autos.

I dipped my toe into 10mm with a 1911. I made some 180gr loads with blue dot (1250-1300 FPS) and they are stiff. 10 makes 45 seem tame and 9 seem weak. 1 cylinder or magazine is plenty of “magnum” rounds for me. I can’t fathom shooting enough full power 10 to break something.

It’s a great round, but still in the novelty realm for me.

The Delta Elite was not a fun gun for me to shoot with anything loaded much over .40S&W levels. I was kind of ‘over’ the round until I shot a Glock 40 MOS, which was much more enjoyable to shoot, if not look at.

Dang, that DE was a pretty gun. The last one I had didn’t even get shot...just fondled from time-to-time.

I agree. I have three 44 magnum revolvers: 2 1/2" Ruger Alaskan, 5" S&W 629 Classic, and 7 1/2" Ruger Redhawk. I also used to have a 10" Dan Wesson for silhouette shooting but sold it a few years ago. IMHO, the 44 mag is the most versatile handgun cartridge out there. I have ammo loaded for several uses, all loaded with magnum brass.

    • 165 grain lead plinking load
    • 200 grain lead SWC Field Pistol load (100 yards)
    • 200 grain JHP "defense" load
    • 240 grain Hornady SIL. big bore silhouette load (200 meters)
    • 240 grain lead SWC plinking load
    • 240 grain lead SWC Field Pistol load (1050fps)
    • 245 grain lead SWC big bore silhouette load
    • 300 grain lead SWC in case a grizzly attacks me in NW Indiana

There is a wide range of bullet weights out there for the 44. You can even get bullets heavier than 300 grains. Very versatile cartridge.

Unlike BE Mike, I did end up getting a 10mm. A friend was selling some guns for a neighbor and I picked up a S&W 1006 with adjustable sights. Nice gun, Fun to play with, but has not gotten much use lately. I am more of a revolver guy. If I was going to get a 10mm to shoot on a regular basis, a good 1911 would probably be my pick too.

I now have 4 10mm offerings all based off the 1911.
Going to run in the latest one today.

    Crap pic...sorry.

Today I bought my first gun chambered in 40sw long pistol

I've become a major fan of Slovakian guns lately so when my lgs had a grand power p40L in the case it had to follow me home.

I got my first 10mm yesterday and at the same time crossed over to the dark side. I picked up a G20. I went on record saying I would never go Glock....never say never and always stay away from always.

I've had my S&W 610 for nearly 30 years and have taken it to Montana when I go camping in bear country, however, I recently decided (after reading an article in an outdoor mag that many guides in bear country carry a G20) to go ahead and buy a Glock 20 and Underwood 200 gr FMJ at 1250 fps...I already feel safer!!!

Yeah, after shooting a G20, I'd like to have one for bear country.

Looks like Glock has not made a Gen 5 G20 yet. I'm thinking a Gen 5 G20 MOS would be the way to go when/if they make one.

Can not wait until Hi-Point makes a 10 mm pistol. They are ugly and inexpensive but who has a better warranty than Hi-Point?

    I love 10mm.

Every auto load caliber is a compromise, but 10mm seems to me to be the best all around automatic pistol caliber.

I’ve had a hankering for a DW Bruin bronze since they came out. Still do. Oh well, maybe I’ll end up setting for a G40.
