I have to share this because it is all too funny and downright scary all at the same time...
I have posted before about my nephew: young, recent college-grad, who was all about Bernie during the last election.
A couple of weekends ago I went out East to help my brother move from NC to MD and when the subject of politics came up my nephew declared that he would vote for whoever the Democrat candidate was, unless it was Bernie or Elizabeth Warren. I was really quite floored by this, so much so that I was left speechless and unable to ask for an explanation. I mean, last election there wasn't a day that went by without some sort of praise of how incredibly awesome Bernie is.
Later, I was able to recover enough to ask by brother about it. He laughed, and said that he was just as floored the first time he had heard his nephew speak negatively about Bernie. The explanation is that my nephew, very bright kid, AP classes throughout high school, pre-med college-grad, has since learned exactly what the word socialism actually means. He literally did not know the meaning of the word back when he was all for it, according to him! He was under the impression that it was all about equal opportunity, fairness and social justice, not about equal outcomes regardless of the effort put in.
He is still a Democrat for now, but it is, at least, a crack in the armor. I don't know who got through to him, he is not one to listen to anybody, but it gives me hope for him yet.
I don’t see the hullabaloo here. He dropped hours from the salaried people so they stay above $15 per hour. He’s going out of his way to NOT take advantage of them. Now, $15 is still not a ton of money these days, and one could make more at an Amazon warehouse.

It's just so much fun.
Clearly, what they wanted was to make the equivalent of $15/hr for the hours they work. This would be an effective raise......but Bernie refused to pay them more money, but rather cut their hours.
This is EXACTLY what will happen if a $15/hr minimum wage is forced upon employers. They will find ways to comply without laying out more cash.....which Bernie and his socialist cohorts refuse to acknowledge even if it's exactly what they, themselves, do.
Agreed. He's limiting his salaried employees to only about 43 hours per week. There really isn't any hypocrisy in this. In fact, limiting worker's hours is a pretty common pro-labor goal.
This "article" is spin.
The letter field organizers have reportedly drafted also makes reference to the effect of their salaries on morale. “Many field staffers are barely managing to survive financially, which is severely impacting our team’s productivity and morale,” it reads, according to the Post. “Some field organizers have already left the campaign as a result.”
No hypocrisy?
C'mon. He is finding a way to technically "comply" with the idea of $15/hr without paying his employees more.
Let's look at it this way. Let's say that he had 12 hourly employees making $13/hr working 60 hours per week. Total payroll before gvt add-ons= $9,360.
They agitate for $15/hour. If they did the same work, this would add $2,440 to the payroll per week, a raise of $120 per person, per week.
What Bernie did was effectively say: "Hell, no I'm not paying each worker another $120/week. I'm going to cut their hours to avoid increasing payroll. Do you really think that's what they were agitating for?
....so who is going to do the other 17 hours of work each employee is no longer doing if they are cut from 60 to 43 hours? If anyone, it's a volunteer. So he cuts hours and replaces an employee for someone without a salary.
Oh sure, no hypocrisy there. What do you think Bernie and his ilk will say when a $15 minimum wage is forced on businesses and workers' hours are cut and they are replaced by non-salaried kiosks?
If I'm paid the same amount for 40 hours per week or 60 hours per week, I know which job I want.
That's not hypocrisy. That's a different way to take care of workers. An extra 20 hours per week can, if the worker wants, be turned into more money. Or it can be used for anything else that worker wants to do.
Yes, an increased minimum wage will reduce the amount of work done for a given amount of money. It's up to the business owner to decide if the additional work is worth the added cost.
I'm not in favor of a $15 minimum wage. But it isn't hypocrisy to limit overtime in order to limit expenses...
This week, the union, in conjunction with the Sanders campaign staffers it represents, has been preparing to send Shakir a new proposal. According to a draft of the proposal obtained by The Post, they are asking for $46,800 for field organizers and $62,400 for regional field directors.
The draft also asked the campaign to cover 100 percent of the health-care costs for employees making $60,000 per year or less. Under the current agreement, the campaign pays all premiums for salaried employees making $36,000 or less per year. Those making more are covered at a rate of 85 percent.
It also requested that the campaign reimburse field staff for automobile transportation at $0.58 per mile.
“We expect negotiations and concessions to be given to this committee by July 31st at the latest, given the urgent nature of raising pay for Field staff and the unsustainability of the current situation,” the draft said.
Sanders, meanwhile, has continued his push for a $15-an-hour wage across the country, hailing the bill recently passed by the House to set that as the federal minimum. In an online video, his campaign featured an Iowa woman who has fought cancer and says she is struggling on $8.25 an hour from her job at McDonald’s.
“Today, we say as loudly and clearly as we can to McDonald’s: Pay your workers a living wage and negotiate with a union!” Sanders says as the video concludes.
$15 an hour is sounding good to me about now!
