Don't the actors get paid a nominal (in their world) sum up front and make most their money on the box office and residuals? Cut him out of the film and there is not tail end to pay to him.

He's required to be paid for the work he did whether or not it's used in the finished film. Regarding residuals, that depends completely on the contract. It's possible he's entitled to residuals even if he's cut from the film. OTOH, if there are "morals" or similar clauses the producers could have an out to crawl through.

Even with those it will probably not work in this case when it's only based on allegations so far.
It's not like if he was charged and found guilty or rape or murder while shooting the movie.
It might also no apply if those events happened before or after he shot the movie.

Actually both front end back end are subject to contract. Whether he has filmed or not may be irrelevant depending on the contract...which often have "morality" clauses. In fact, they pretty much always do. He ain't turning wrenches down at the Ford plant making an hourly. If he was in breach of contract, even if the filming is done and they paid him, it is possible that he may owe them the money back. Too much unknown to determine whether or not.

I am not sure he's denied any of the allegations. Hollywood is confusd on many things but they know America won't watch an admitted child rapist in a movie

Kevin Spacey: Completed film to be reshot without accused actor - BBC News

So he's been replaced and erased from a film he already shot.

Not sure how to feel about that.
All that based on allegations only, he has yet to be charged with any crime or found guilty of any crime.
Plus he has already been paid for the film anyway. It's not like they canceled the movie before they they shot it.

Well, the studio has lots of $$ invested that they're hoping to at least recover.

I don't doubt that but was presuming whatever contract there is would be SAG compliant (required for SAG members), which, as I understand it, would guarantee a minimum wage/salary for the amount of work performed even if/when booted from the project, however that is measured. It might not be much, and yes, there could be a binding morality loophole on that as well if SAG allows it, and if so under what circumstances. The lawyers for all the stakeholders will undoubtedly haggle over this.
