"It wasn't a process of thinking, it was a NOW, you have to do this NOW!" -- James Shaw Jr.

In Extreme Ownership Jocko Willink mentions "be violent" with regards to taking action. Don't beat around the bush hemming and hawing over your decision.

In his podcast two separate Fighter Pilot veterans mentioned instructors/mentors who said, "When the enemy is on your 6 and has a bead on you, do something, and do it violently."

I haven't read all the articles. Any confirmation that the shooter was "Porky Piggin'" during the shooting?

...and as for Shaw, heroes seldom feel like heroes. They just do heroic things...which he did.

Generally, I think saving your own life is not being a hero.

But, in this case, he saved others, so yes, to me he is a hero.
Intentions don't matter as much as action.

Especially, when the bullets are flying.

I think he said it was a graze, but it could have been from something sent flying by the bullets.

Barrel burn? How many shots were fired before it jammed? Not sure how hot the muzzle would get at a magazine-worth or fewer rounds, but the shape of the wound looks like it's a possibility.

(I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV nor on the internet, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night...)

I did hear something about him burning his hands on the barrel, so it's plausible. My mistake may be trusting a reporter for anything.

Guy getting in his car to come to work had to wrestle a pistol.
    He lost.
Fortunate for him, the bad guy started running and threw his shot off.
Caught the coworker in the earlobe.
    Talk about close.

from npr news nice quote by shaw.

"I did that completely out of a selfish act. I was completely doing it just to save myself. Now, me doing that, I did save other people. But I don't want people to think that I was the Terminator, or Superman or anybody like that. It was just, I figured if I was going to die, he was going to have to work for it."
