Yep, I have personally had guns taken from me and thrown into a police lockup in a wet basement. I got it back but it was severely messed up.

one other thing......those old M1911's where not heat treated and prone to crack.....and if i was to shoot it i would shoot very light loads in it.....i have a Remington UMC 1918 and it seats in a nice display case....

My favorite 1911 to carry is a Kimber Compact Stainless II. It has a stainless slide and aluminum frame. It is a compact so the barrel is not 5 inches, but I've noticed no loss in accuracy over my full size Springfield. That is, when shooting at 7 to 15 yards. I'm guessing I'd see a wider pattern the farther I go out.

It' pretty cool that you are carrying your Grandfather's pistol. I've bought pistols with an eye towards them becoming heirlooms and hope that one day, a gun that I've purchased can protect one of my grand kids (don't have any yet) and their families.

I know that the gun was re-worked by Colt at one point. It is no longer blued. Would this heat treatment be corrected when it was reworked? Would pics or anything help? I'm just curious.

Thats sick. My grandfather gave my dad a nazi luger he got off an officer in WW2, but that would be a little ridiculous to carry IMHO.... not to mention the whole value thing.

I wonder if he had his 1911 before he passed away :/

I think most WWII vets got to keep their side arm. That'd would be neat to find it somewhere.

I know when my grandpa passed away, he had 4 guns and only 3 could be found. There was a pearl handled revolver that no one could ever find. Everything was check, even the above the veiling tiles. So one day, someone is going to be very very lucky.

i have a copy.....did you call Colt and give them the serial numbers for the date of 1914?

I did some research and based of the serial number (19615) it appears to be a 1914. I did contact the archive service at Colt and gave them all of the info on the gun that I knew, and they are doing their research and will be getting me a certificate of authenticity for the gun that should be here by the end of this year. I contacted them back in early August to start the archive service research.
