One of my main SHTF/prepping thoughts is that I can't anticipate all of the possibilities. And, while my "necessary" calibers are pretty much the same as yours, I can very easily see a SHTF situation where having a .22 might be useful.

Even if I don't plan to subsist off of squirrels and chipmunks, I could see the usefulness in being able to take small game when I want without blowing it full of big holes. Another thing to consider is that, post SHTF, it would be far easier to improvise a silencer for a .22 than for more powerful guns, allowing me to hunt small game without advertising my presence to others. Growing up in a rural area, it's almost hard for me to think about not having a .22 in my house.

I think it all depends on your environment. I've got 2 or 3 squirrels that hang around in my backyard. That doesn't go very far. Rural folks will have more variety, but I still don't think that there is enough game in Indiana to be much of a factor in a real "Walking Dead" type scenario.

I didn't think of the ease of silencing a .22, that is a good point.

Dang it!!! (See above post).....I thought it was YOURS and I just admitted to having a 9mm.....But uh...Yeah...It's my wife's too...Not mine....:)

Do not for 1 second think I do not enjoy running the 9mm. If any of you have experienced the sheer joy of a fully tuned 9mm CZ you will understand. This thing is a dead on shooter. Runs flat and smooth. It makes me look like I am good...There, does that help...:):

Having met CM, there's no way that his manhood could be called into question.

With indiucky, I'm not sure ..... it depends on the musical that he liked. West Side Story = no problem. Singin' in the Rain = worrisome ! ;)

    Training.

Don't buy another gun. Invest in training.

Then invest in water stores / purification methods. Also food stores.

First aid supplies. And training / knowledge on how and what to do.

Mammynun let me run his CZ75 tuned up that he shoots matches with....We were up at the farm one weekend and he had brought it up...We had been shooting our 44 magnum revolvers and he asked me to give it a try...

It was one of the most amazing guns I ever fired...Rapid fire steel ringing and the recoil was like a .22.....

I say this as a wheel gun man...It was one of the most accurate, pleasant guns I have ever fired in my life....Pure joy.....You MAY have seen Mammynun's CZ IIRC....I loved it.....

I may end up with one someday....

How about a completely different direction. Being a gun forum, most of us have plenty of guns, but we can't shoot, what we can't see. Thermal scope maybe?

    Back on the OP's subject:

I agree that training, med supplies, food stores, etc. need to be the main part of your budget and plan. But since you asked about weapons, I will suppose you have those covered. For your next weapon, I would get a lightweight .22LR carbine and a suppressor for it. Low key, light, quiet and multiple uses. Great for practice and you will get more trigger time more often when you buy the 22.

My personal gun is a Nylon 66 chopped down to 16" with a screw on can. I can use the can with my 2213 pistol or the rifle. Stupid quiet, light, unobtrusive when I cover the whole thing with camo cling wrap. looks like a single shot at a distance since its so thin.
