Wife gave me $600 to spend on myself, what should I use it for?

If she and the in-laws gave you money for something specific, I would get the item they gave you the money for. If they gave it to you to "do whatever you want with", then I'd say you're good to entertain other thoughts. Just my opinion. If I gave someone money for something specific, I'd expect them to use it for that item.

+1 on this. I think that your wife and in-laws could be upset if you chose to spend the money differently than what it was collected for. It might not bother them if you purchased something in the same price range, but if you bought a Heritage Rough Rider and banked the rest of the money then I'd say they would be ticked off. Speaking of the Rough Rider you should get one of those eventually because it's a fun gun to shoot!

+1 to meeting the intent of the family providing the gift. The spirit of the gift should trump the practical stuff.

But to deviate a bit ...if it were me. I would consider starting to reload to remedy the ammo situation and see if there is a way to get her involved more with USPSA. Maybe a class together. This solves the ammo Issue and gets after the training with her. Both could be mutually enduring.

This is on my mind. If the wife (back in the early days, after 35 years things are different) had given me money to buy A and I didn’t buy A, she would’ve been ticked. If I ever looked at A, talked about it again, It would have been a SHTF event.

If my (then) young wife wanted to give me $600 at Christmas, the first thing I'd do is walk around the car to look for damage. If there weren't any dents, I'd wonder which one of her friends was going to leave their little kids with us for two weeks while they go on vacation. But then, if she enlisted her parents to help with the money................that could only mean they were in on whatever it was........................

If they gave you the money with a specific gun in mind, I would use the money to purchase that specific gun. If you have decided that you no longer want it, I would thank them and offer to return the money. If they then said buy whatever you want, then I would consider other options. That is a great gift. If you unintentionally offend them, you will never get another chance.

Just.buy the.damn pistol ...That's what the money was given for. That's what it was intended for. That's what you really want.
You're squared away enough financially, and you've been given a gift. Say thank you and take it. Think of your inlaws and your wonderful wife every time you shoot it.
Save money as you can, and do get a shotgun and a .22. Later.
And congratulations on graduating, and on BOLC.

50 replies and no one has stated, "ITS A TRAP!!" Buy her something, then spend the other $550 on training and ammo.

So my amazing wife blew me away this Christmas. Not only did she get me a big set of steel targets, she got together with my in laws and gave me enough to buy the gun that I've been wanting that just happened to pop up on r/gundeals:

    https://www.kygunco.com/Product/View?ItemNo=128636&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=Year End

I have wanted an SFX for over a year. Originally sold my MP9 to get both an Elite and SFX but had some financial roadbumps and only ended up with the Elite. It does everything well, but I just know the SFX is made for Carry Optics (which I want to try), and it's the shiny new thing, who doesn't love an upgrade :):

Now I have the money in hand, but can't bring myself to pull the trigger. I keep feeling like there's something else I should be spending it on. Maybe I feel bad because I'm spending it all on one thing I don't really NEED, maybe it's just weird because I've been looking at it for so long, I don't know.

While I'm pondering life questions, I want INGOs help spending my money

Here is my safe as it sits now:

My AR, nothing special, with a TRS-25 for plinking/2gun
    My Elite, for USPSA/carry/nightstand
    Her SR9, steel/carry/nightstand
    Our Shield, carry
    My Ruger MKIII, plinking
    300rds 9mm, with components for 500more
    200rds 5.56
    An unmounted Vortex Crossfire 2-7x32

Other things I could spend this money on:

A 2nd AR, because they are stupid cheap right now/2 is 1, 1 is none/I have an optic to put on it  I could also make it 'hers' and have her input in getting components/building it, even though the money is supposed to be for me

A shotgun, because I don't have one, and I could end up using it for 3gun and maybe (hopefully) hunting

The SFX without the Venom for ~$450, and spend the remainder on ammo, and get the Venom later (I just hate to do this because I doubt I'll be able to find a Venom for $150)

Or I can spend it on something else that you feel I'm missing. What should I do? :Ingo:

If I were in your position I'd add something I didn't already have. Since the gift comes from your wife you'd be able to say that she gave you the first "__________" you ever got, and that might mean something over the years. You mentioned not having a shotgun, so that's what I'd suggest, and you'd be able to get a nice one for $600 or a really nice one using the $600 as a solid starting point. Assuming you're talking about deer hunting I'm seeing Mossberg Slugsters out there for just over $400, Remington 870 Express Deer models for $500-up and some seriously nice variants for $1000-up. Let us know what you decide and post some gun-porn of your purchase. Happy gun shopping. :)

You can't sit on that money, the spirit of the gift was for you to get an awesome new gun. Take it for what it is, anything else is a little bit offensive to the gift givers
