Kirk, FT. Bliss TX, i980, I was a soldier, a Sergeant, Military Policeman, I had both a young wife and son, I applied for and received a CCW, had to go to court and appear before a Judge as I remember.
My Uncle Sam, let me carry many a weapon around the world by then, but in 1980, I got my first Handgun permit, on a budget I bought two pistols, a Jennings.22 then a Raven .25, to protect myself and my family, that's my story.

1991, MI. This was before the new CPL and most people couldn't get what they called a general carry permit. I got one because I was working at the Indiana State Prison. Carried a S&W 4006.

Dr. Suzanna Gratia and the other activists in Texas from the 1990s would be very surprised by this. The first concealed handgun license law in Texas was passed by the legislature and signed into law by then Governor George W. Bush in 1995.

Such licenses/permits were not available in Texas prior to that.

Did you receive some kind of special privilege and documentation because of your military duties?

    Hmm. Have to think.

Okay, sometime back in the 80s, I suddenly developed an unexected need to have a personal protection weapon on my person. My father had loaned me a S&W 15, but had asked for it back a couple weeks before. Bummer. Went to Wal Mart that evening, gun shops were closed, and perused the handguns. Yeah, that long ago. REALLY wanted the shiny Colt Officer's 1911 in the case, sadly, not enough folding green in my wallet. Bought a Rossi 851 revolver in .38 special instead, along with a holster and two boxes of ammo. Not top tier, but the gun worked, surprisingly well, and I was armed.

I got a License to Carry Handgun sometime later. Trying to remember the year. ??

I was completely unaware that this was possible pre-1996, but am not licensed in Texas.

    I'll start digging into it.
