Took my Baby Eagle to Atterbury's Range today. Just to give some background on this piece for those who don't know... I bought it back in late April and was denied. After 4, almost 5 months of waiting, paperwork, and a visit from the ATF, I won my appeal and picked it up on the 5th.
The Eagle is a 9mm Semi-Compact, Polymer Frame w/ Integrated Weaver Rail, in DA/SA with Slide Decocker. It came with 2 Ten Round Magazines, plastic case, 2 bristle brushes(metal and plastic), owner's manual, Registration Card, and the test fire Casing. I also purchased with it 25rnds of Hornady XTP and 100rnds of Fiocchi to add to my collection of 9mm.
I got to the range giddy with excitement, packed with ammo in my ammo can, totin my Baby and my SKS, with Shoot-N-C targets in hand. I paid my money got to the table and laid it all out. Of course, I opted to shoot my Baby first!
First, my Ammo choices were as follows... Fiocchi FMJ, Winchester FMJ, Speer Gold Dot HP, and Hornaday XTP HP. Finances kept me from buying the Top-of-the-Line loads... Also shot most rounds at 15yds. First up was the Winchester. Good stuff. 100 rounds without even a hiccup. On the paper every shot! I was a bit nervous at first and was all over the target. But none the less, not a single FTF or FTE. Next up was the XTP. Only ten rounds due to lack of money... 9 went through without a problem. One round jammed as the slide was 90% closed. Racked the slide, reloaded, fired, no problem. 10 shots all within 4". Low and to the left. Not too shabby. Next up was the Fiocchi. Nice round IMHO. 150 rounds not a single problem. 3" groups, no bullseye left on the page so I had to recover the target. Last up for the 15yrds was the Gold Dot. Absolute CRAP ammo. IMHO. Had 10rnds and all but 2 rnds FTF. one even jammed so bad I couldn't get it clear until after much fiddling. Safety on of course. I will never buy Speer again. I plan to buy Powerball loads next time around.
Next I went to 25yds Just for fun. This Eagle is truly amazing. All rounds fired were Fiocchi. About 100rnds. Not one FTF or FTE and had 3-4" groups every time and blew the target off the board. This gun is supremely accurate and very light. Wow. I LOVE IT!!
More about the feel of the Eagle. Trigger pull is crisp and easy in SA. I was apprehensive to use it in DA, but trigger pull in DA is still smooth and fairly light. It's surely lighter than my S&W Sigma was for sure! The Kel-Tec P11 has a lighter DAO trigger pull than the DA of the Eagle, but the Eagle still wins hands down in the Trigger department. I wouldn't change it for the world. The grip is perfect for my smaller hand. This is one of the main reasons I bought the pistol in the first place. Top three main reasons that is. It is so light and fits sooo nice in my hands like it was made for me. My only complaint is that the slide lock lever is just about a half inch too far that I have to use either my other hand to lock it back or reach for it with my strong hand. The Decocker is in perfect reach and functions perfectly. I was apprehensive to use the decocker alone without holding the hammer back, but I tested it multiple times throughout my testing and it works flawlessly with one in the chamber. The sights are big and bright white and perfectly on target. Unless I ever decide to go tritum sights, which i doubt I will, the need not be changed. The weaver rail gives me the option to attach a light or laser or both so I won't need to change the sights.
After I brought it home I cleaned it reallllllllly good and oiled it down. I couldn't have asked for a better pistol. As for throwing it in the dirt with a glock and comparing reliability... HA! She's too beautiful and precious to do such a thing to her! Besides, I'd hate to get my hands dirty shooting a Glock! J/K
So here's my review of the Semi-Compact Polymer Baby Desert Eagle in 9mm. I do plan on purchasing a nicer holster and 4 more 15rnd mags so the next time I'm at the range I don't have to spend so much time reloading.... :P
