If they let him get by without a proper septic system then how can they force anyone else to have it? The laws can't say "one person's waste is ok but a family's isn't".

People love caring for the homeless, windmill farms, property rights, etc until it drops their property values a nickel. I'd bet a box of ammo that this has all originated from neighbors calling in to complain about him.

I live in the country also. My water comes from a well, and my poop drops into a big tank beside my house.........

Lessee, I just built a house. I myself, prefer working toilets in my house instead of going out into the cold to take a dump. I myself, prefer a working septic system that won't give me troubles instead of going out to unplug it in the cold. I myself, chose to have a proper system for my own benefit, not because some NANNY said I had to.

Oh, the noes! You'll bring death to all of civilization. What city slickers fail to realize is that their municipalities do the same thing with your poop that an outhouse or septic system does. It's just even more of a concentration of it. Plus, you get all the drugs people flush or filter through their bodies into a higher concentration into the drinking water than 1 man on 38 acres could ever dream of doing.

I wondered why the last visitors to my house showed up looking like this...

Yep. Some quick Googling turns up some info about his outhouse and zoning violations.

So, all this uproar about him getting the boot for "living too simply" and "charged with being too poor" are a bunch of hooey. His waste system is not up to code. Same rules as your house or mine.

    He had plenty of options:
    - get the system up to code
    - change to a system that didn't violate the code
    - apply for a variance
    - move to a local where his system meets code
    - Edit: forgot one - lobby to have the code changed (you know, the who democracy thing)

We have the codes for a reason, you know. It isn't about "big government". It is about keeping your crap out of my water source.

NOTE: the USA is a constitutional republic, not a democracy... :-)

This while thing smells to me like a land grab.

I looked at the address on the order from the channel 8 video.
It's in the country along SR 28 near Alexandria, IN.
I also checked the tax records.
It's listed as tillable agricultural vacant land 38.12 acres with semi-annual taxes of $356.54 with an assessed value of $52,100

SURE, this man is technically breaking some ordinances.
BUT I think there's more to why this man is being gone after than this.
LIKE, somebody wants this land for themselves...?

THE TRUTH of why this is happening will become clear in the near future when this man is run off his land.

    STAY TUNED as to:
    1. What price he's forced to take for the land because he can't live there.
    2. Who ends up with it.
    3. What goes in there with the new owners.
    4. How much more property tax is able to be collected.

I personally own a nice corner 38 acre corner lot in the country in NW Indiana, and I bet I could put a trailer like this man's on it and live there and I doubt that anybody without an AGENDA would bother me.

This whole thing stinks of something other than what at face value we're being led to believe.

I wonder if he could have a porta potty?

Isn't that what an outhouse is? Instead his poo goes on his own property instead of someone else's? I guess poo in city sewage systems dissappears and doesn't go into the ground like outhouses and septic systems do.

Tons of drugs dumped into wastewater - Health - Health care - msnbc.com

Drugs in the Water - Beachapedia

Seriously, are people worried about one man's poo in an outhouse contaminating their drinking water when city sewers are dumping contaminates into water bodies which in turn end up in your drinking water. I guess only the government is professional enough to contaminate your drinking water.

    We are all wrong!

Funny, we are all wrong. Shows that we ALL need to do some research before spouting off.

    https://mycase.in.gov/CaseDetail.aspx?CaseID=6719060

Refers to the following Madison County Zoning:
    http://www.madisoncounty.in.gov/Zoning Ordinances/main6.10.pdf

    and specifically:
    C. In no case shall the vehicle be used for overnight sleeping or living.
Now, we can all get back to ranting about "big government" and all of our trampled rights. At least we will be ranting about the CORRECT code violation.

    My learnings:
    - don't trust the Media for facts
    - don't trust Google results for facts
    - do your own research
    - we can get 5 pages of tinfoil before someone finally looks for the facts :ingo:
    - know your zoning!

I think this revelation actually makes it a little bit worse.

We are no longer worrying about supposed "safety" of the neighbors. Now it just boils down to local busybodies disapproving of what it looks like deep inside his 38 acre property..

Now, we can all get back to ranting about "big government" and all of our trampled rights. At least we will be ranting about the CORRECT code violation.
I am guessing that you still support the town? I don't think there is any question about the Bigness of our Government. And the only way you could say our property rights have not been trampled is if you don't believe in property to begin with. The rants are justified.

What business is it of the towns if the man wants to live in a camper? This is either a case of people crying about property values or a land grab. As we all know, most INGOers don't care about land grabs so long as it benefits them.

A man's home is his castle, even if it is just a run-down old camper, I say leave him alone or allow him to defend himself & his property from busy-bodied tyranny.

My comment was directed to the 5 pages of ranting without knowing WHY we were ranting. One little media story, and we all get worked into a frenzy. No one even bothered to validate anything. Heck, even *I* ran with the sewage angle, until I decided to check further.

Just another example of a little information being dangerous.

I think we all got "played" by the media. The case against this guy was filed in JUNE. No one cared then. Now, on the day AFTER he was supposed to be out, we suddenly care? A little late, don't you think?

BTW: never said I sided with any town.

If you don't like an ordinance, work to get it changed, or even repealed. Get a variance for your own property. Ignore it, and hope it goes away? Then complain when your elected officials come knocking? Sorry.

Also, BTW: If the address is correct, and Google Maps is displaying properly, his trailer is on the same property as a very nice house. Why is he not living there? Once again, I'm guessing there is more to the story.

Bah.... I should just throw out a "I hates the guberment" one-liner and call it a day.....

I propose we make our way there to modify said vehicle into a "structure"; instead of *****ing.

Anyone else willing to help this guy out?

The first guy to talk about sewage was somebody in this forum called "williamrights" and then people started agreeing with him. I responded to the silliness of the idea.

I would have cared in June if somebody would have told me.

Well you don't seem to be siding with the old man...

The dude lives in a camper without electricity. Maybe he's not browsing the internet studying local zoning ordinances. He figures he still lives in the Land of the Free and he's still "allowed" to sit on his property and mind his own business.

Also, BTW: If the address is correct, and Google Maps is displaying properly, his trailer is on the same property as a very nice house. Why is he not living there? Once again, I'm guessing there is more to the story.

If property rights exist, then it shouldn't really matter if he lives in a tent, a mobile home, or 2 mansions next door to each other. His reasons shouldn't make a bit of difference. Maybe he got in a fight with his wife.

Bah.... I should just throw out a "I hates the guberment" one-liner and call it a day.....

    His property, right?
Who was he hurting, raping, torturing to provoke such an outrage that he has to go through this? We send kids over seas every day to die on foreign soil for their "freedom" and then hassle an individual for living naturally on HIS land, in a non-harmful manner of his choosing, just like our ancestors did only a few generations ago. I wonder, as more and more screwed up as America is becoming each day, at what point does a person stand up and just say no?

    Just curious.

ok, ok I will admit I was the one that complained about this "neighbor" cause us peeps up in NWI are going to attempt a state land grab of that 35+ acres so we can set up a gangster shooting range!:D
