What if I told you patriotic fervor was a tool of the state?

That you're only mad because they've told you to be mad. That 'murica - even if it is the greatest country ever - wasn't really 'murica until about a hundred years ago and all this nationalism was only pushed to make you easier to control?

You're mad at a dude you don't know because he sat down for a little while. "Well, it's the principle of it, slim. How dare you not jump up and wave the flag for 'murica. What are you, a communist? This dude was disrespectful and he needs to pay. 'MURICA!!!!"

...and you wonder why the NFL is a non-profit org.

The voice of the sovereign citizen.

Except that his actions belie all that education.
Sherman actually demonstrates a level of intelligence well above his already well known (Stanford graduate) academic accomplishments.

Valedictorian or salutatorian of his high school class if I'm not mistaken... I enjoy listening to him talk, and hearing his story.

Not really. Those who are mad are mad at his rationale, the myth of bodies in the street propagated by BLM and the lies it's been built on.

And of course patriotism is to benefit the state. However a lot of us see an advantage to living in a society, and things that tie that society together are therefore good for both society and individuals. Control in and of itself isn't evil or inappropriate. A time card and hourly wage is a method of control, but without one most businesses wouldn't function.

Nice to see that the 49'ers and the NFL actually have his back. Nice to see an employer supporting freedom of speech, for once. Even if the nationalists are losing their collectivist ****.

You just can't help yourself, can you?

He is exercising his Right to speech in a manner that suits him. In typical INGO fashion the people have come out of the woodwork to speak out against his Right. Freedom of speech is only correct when it's the type of speech in a the accepted manner, to some people. Sorry it doesn't work that way. But I respect your Right to speak against his Rights, even when you're wrong.

Kravitz lays it out and he says it pretty well.

KRAVITZ: If Kaepernick wants to sit during the National Anthem, that's his right - 13 WTHR Indianapolis
What the **** are you talking about? INGO isn't saying he doesn't have the right to be a douchebag. They're just exercising their free speech to call him a douchebag. Why are you so against free speech?

jamil (suspects AlMrJarrell supports free speech equally for everyone, except that progressives are more equal than conservatives)

    1) I'm not mad.

    2) My beef with Kaepernick is not with the fact that he sat, or that he's not showing patriotism. I really don't give a flying **** whether any of the players stand or sit. My only beef with Kaepernick is that he's full of ****. ETA: and he's kinda sucked as a player for the last couple of years.

And given the suspicious nature of his "sincerity", you know, privileged life coupled with the fact that "hands up don't shoot" didn't happen, I kinda suspect that he's virtue signaling.

Well, wait. I guess I actually am mad. Not at Kaepernick. I guess I'm mad because people care about this. I wish people treated it as the big "meh" it is.

People who have a vested interest in this Country, paid by their own personal blood, sweat and tears are naturally going to feel defensive against those who seek to destroy it.. The ball player has a right to be as ugly as he wants, of course everyone else has the right to reject his views state their opinions also. Being paid to wear a jock strap, or being paid to appear on a Hollywood camera, does no elevate a person to any special status.

I thought the 49ers would dump him this year. He hasn't been much the last couple of years. Any NFL quarterback whose success depends on his legs over his arm is going to have a very short shelf life in that league.

First amendment. His right to be a douchebag.

yes. That means the government can't restrict his "speech". Can't force him to stand or impose any penalties on him for failure to do so. But that doesn't mean that his teammates or fans can't react to his "statement".

For me, standing for a national anthem before a game is not about nationalism, it is about respect. Whether it is the US anthem, Canadian anthem, or some other nation's anthem the players and crowd should be showing respect. While the teams cannot control the crowds, they should make sure that their players are showing respect.
