I have a difficult time comprehending how these pistols don't have any history. They were produced before and during WW2. They saw action all over the world during the Second World War, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, and probably some smaller conflicts. I would say that they have a lot of history, even other countries may have used at one time or another

CMP is looking for profit on this one.

Unlike the Garand, CMP should sell these 1911's untouched, as-is, the way they came from the Army, for maybe $200 a piece. Put these guns in The People's hands, let them work on it. It's not like we don't have enough gunsmith and manufactures making 1911 parts.

Of course they are looking to make a profit, and why shouldnt they?? This is how they fund all their programs. I saw squeeze every single penny they can out of them so they can continue to do what they were organized to do. They were not started so they could supply you with cheap firearms below market value.

I think some people are butthurt they can’t buy them from CMP cheap and then flip them with a big markup like they did with the Garands.

The history I'd be looking for is the history I carried for years on several continents, and where ever else they might have been. Is my Garand a bit of a mix master? Yeah, but the receiver is Winchester, Sept of '42. My dad carried these guns in two wars. Did he carry this one? Unlikely...but not impossible. Will I have carried one of the 1911's I might get? Unlikely...but not impossible.

So yeah, it does have history and memories; maybe not for some but for me. If it truly had significant traceable history the CMP probably wouldn't sell it and you probably couldn't afford it.

Selling unserviceable, possibly dangerous weapons and expecting the buyer to fix them sounds like a really bad idea. Not that I wouldn't buy a box full at that price and take my chances.

I would love to own one of these but right now it's like a bunch of sharks circling the boat with blood in the water and a few buckets of chum. No thanks, hopefully it will calm down after the first year or so and a normal process will come around.

People will flip them, only difference is with a bigger base number.

And purchasing guns with the intention to sale without an FFL is a crime too.

Yep! "Due diligence." Selling a dangerous weapon that you didn't make and not inspecting and knowing its condition is counterproductive to continued existence for an organization.

I want the one "Mookie" our Plt Medic carried.
In a time long ago we used to have to night fire with the .45
Mookie had a stove pipe and just as the lights came on he turned the pistol to look down the barrel to see what went wrong!
    The memories!

Update from the CMP on pricing:

Concerning sale price of the 1911s: CMP has been selling M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, 1903s, .22s, etc. for 21+ years and we have never taken advantage of anyone. CMP is not going to start price gouging people now with the 1911s. The 1911s will be priced at fair market value just like our M1 Garands. The CMP's enabling legislation directs sales of items at fair market value.

Apparently, they've heard the online rage...but probably mostly from folks who are upset about the one per year policy...waaa

Well from reading the guidelines they're only going to be selling one pistol per calendar year to each customer only. What sucks for me is I am a C&R license holder, licensed by the ATF. They won't accept that license it has to go to a normal FFL.
