The man may indeed know the material front to back. But the flip flops definitely have a less than professional vibe - at a gun range Id say wearing flip flops is careless, even. As a customer, Id buy elsewhere.

Exactly. Almost all classes have rules on what you wear to a class (like hearing protection and eye pro) and many have recommendations on clothing to avoid injury. Flip flops in a shooting class is stupid.

I put Flip Flop Trainers in the same category of a few local trainers I knew and know now that shoot in our games but request an unpublished score. You drink it.

Depends on the circumstances, who the trainer was, and what other options are available. I care less about what an instructor is wearing and more about what I could learn.

The other way to look at it is, would you let one individual's poor choice get in the way of you gaining insight, knowledge or skill that you desire?

It would have to have be a "been there done that type of guy" for me to overlook flip flops on the range. If they had credibility it could be overcome. Some schmuck wearing flip flops I don't care to know him. But since I moved out of Putnam County and stopped shopping at Wal Mart I have been looking down at many more people these days.

If the instructor isn't professional enough to wear appropriate attire, I'd turn arround ask for my money back and walk out.

Now if he was teaching how to surfboard to newbs on a beach, that's another story.

I've seen a lot of similar comments on forums, but I have not yet ever seen anyone actually do it. I am aware of a significant number of situations in which people said afterward that they knew they should just leave a class for some reason, but they were not able or chose not to leave.

If you are talking about an instructor on the gun range. Yes, shoes would be more appropriate.

    With that said...
I'm from the west coast so as a kid growing up, flip-flops were worn everywhere including school all the way up through college. If I wasn't wearing flip-flops then I was usually barefoot. Shoes were only worn for church (mom didn't approve my "dress" flip-flops) or long bike rides, any work when it really mattered and some days in the winter. (CA never really got that cold) Surfing, skateboarding or sometimes just walking around town, barefoot.

When older I taught at a few Universities and a College among other things. Any classroom time it was flip-flops. In my office, I went barefoot. Any type of shop activities it was work boots. (safety first) At the same time I also taught scuba classes plus I was at the beach at least 2 times a week then scuba on the weekends. Scuba classroom time was flip-flops. Any beach time I was mostly barefoot but the sand and sidewalks can get hot so flip-flops were on and off all day.

I also jogged and for that you needed shoes unless it was jogging at the beach in the mornings.

    Fighting -
Hands down that barefoot fighting is the way to go. In my prime my feet were way faster without shoes. (especially boots) Wearing slip on type shoes (Vans) or flip-flops you can easily kick them off if needed and get them back on without even bending down. (now, not so much)

All my life, including now, I will kick off my foot wear when in or around my home. It's just what's natural for me.

If I came across a gun instructor teaching in the classroom and he was wearing his flip-flops? I would feel right at home.

I know CA is a totally different and a foreign country compared to here but really whatever the person is most comfortable doing, I won't complain. Still, safety wise, "teaching" on the gun range he should be in some kind of footwear. Me? I've shot in flip-flops all the time.

    BTW-
In CA the other word for flip-flops is- "Thongs".
That got super confusing after moving here. My kids will still catch me saying it.

Crocs are also a poor choice of footwear for a lot of activities. Range shooting - go for it.

Training classes and riding motorcycles? Poor choice.

    Crocs...

So, when Mike Judge was working on Idiocracy, the costume designer came to him and said, "I found the most ridiculous shoes for your dystopian film, no one would ever choose these ugly shoes; they're perfect for the idiot characters!"

    You guessed it, Crocs.
