I understand where RIA are made, but they don't claim to be made in Illinois try finding a picture or literature stating where the pistol is made on the springfield website. If I buy springfield I expect an american made product.
It is American made. ;) :D

OP, you might consider a used 1911 to increase your value for money equation. I bought a used (2003 vintage) TRP at the January 1500 for $725.

Both of my Kimbers cost well under $1000 brand new. My Ultra Carry was $780 and my stainless Compact was $850. That said, I'd just go ahead and get a RIA. My RIA Compact was $479 and is every bit as accurate and reliable as my Kimbers. It's heavier, but not too heavy.

An Interarms Silver Cup (Remington-Rand slide, USGI small parts, and built on an Essex frame), was my first 1911.

AIM has an ATI 1911 for $399. It's made in the Philippines but for the price I may be checking them out a little closer.

I've only got one 1911 now and I never shoot it, it's a custom 7" longslide and it shoots beautifully but I'm afraid of damaging it for some reason (the guy who built it passed away). It'd be nice to find an inexpensive but still reliable 1911 option.

    Over by the lake.
Please tell me you started this thread on a dare after a couple of cocktails....sometimes there are reasons some things cost more than others. Save your nickels and buy a good one, if you don't like it send me a pm and ill buy it from you.

Scanned this thread but did not read every post. The Ruger SR1911 is getting some good press but not too many have handled yet. Pricing figures to be around $600ish. All American made too.

They can be costly, but like everything, you get what you pay for. I've owned a Springfield and a Kimber and sure they cost more than a Glock but to me if you want one you're going to get one regardless of price. You make it happen either by waiting for a deal or penny pinching.
