Springfield79, I hope you and your wife can process what happened and come to some peace without negative lasting impact.

I don't know how my wife or I would fair should something like this occur to us, but I could only pray we would do as well as you appear to have. (I don't know if I could even talk about it)

I was in the range on New Year's Day, approximately 15 feet from the individual teaching my wife how to shoot. I was in the process of reloading my magazines when I heard a woman scream "Oh My God". Didn't hear anything after that and went back to what I was doing. Shortly after a woman came up who appeared in shock, was holding her firearm outside of her pod and simply said "Don't Look". So of course I looked and saw the aftermath / mess. At this point, I wasn't really sure what was going on so I secured my firearms and ensured I had one loaded on me as I wasn't sure if we were dealing with an accident, a suicide, or an active shooter. I pulled my wife into the pod so she was shielded and positioned between the walls for protection. Shortly after all hell broke loose and the staff came in yelling for a cease fire and to leave your stuff and go. I thought I heard "Grab your **** and go" so I gathered my stuff and was the last customer out of the range. Those of us that were in the range were sequestered into a classroom by staff to be interviewed by police. We had to provide a statement and contact information. Shortly after the police arrived, it was confirmed he was DOA. The officer with us in the class advised that from what they could see at the scene and from reviewing video footage, that it was a suicide. We were probably sequestered for about 1.5 hours before we were allowed to leave as they had to wait for the coroner to complete their findings.Apparently the gentleman waited until the RO was out of sight, turned sideways in the stall, and shot himself through the right temple ensuring the bullet would go down range and not into another stall. Hearing protection was found shattered around the 5 and 10 yard markers. The staff was very professional and quick acting in dealing with the situation. I also give a lot of credit to military and first responders who deal with that type of thing on a regular basis. I'm just a civilian and Its been almost a week for me and I still can't get the images out of my head, my anxiety has been amped, and I've relieved it a few times in nightmares. That being said, we were back at the range this past Saturday attempting to get closure on the situation. They remembered us and treated us very well. The local media has the story but I am guessing they are sitting on it since it was a suicide. My heart goes out to the family but I am also quite pissed that the ass-hat decided to do this in a public setting, forever impacting a group of complete strangers.

Man, that's rough and I feel for you.

Springfield79, I'm sorry that you and your wife had to go through that. Sounds terrible. At least the poor guy had decency enough to aim the gun away from everyone other than himself.

Media outlets don't seem to understand this when it comes to other events... I personally doubt any noble cause underlies the media not reporting this, unless you are directly aware of such a policy and it is applied across multiple media outlets.

I'm guessing it just doesn't draw viewers, clicks, etc.

That's the cynical view, and I could be wrong, but I tend to not attribute any altruistic attributes to media outlets.

As a former broadcast journalist of several years - from small town TV stations to capital city "breaking news" outlets in multiple states, climbing my way from videographer to reporter/anchor/producer - I can say that in my experience and the experience of all my friends and former colleagues at competing stations/media companies, it's an established rule that you don't cover suicides unless there is some truly extraordinary factor that makes a particular incident newsworthy. It was exceedingly rare that we ran a story on a suicide, and that was only if for example, the person taking their own life inadvertently created some butterfly effect that had a larger public impact. We didn't cover suicides because we didn't want to glamorize the personal tragedy, or inspire others who may be contemplating such an act and who may be watching us, to think about doing the same thing.

I wish news outlets today carried that same philosophy over to active/mass shooters, police chases, etc., but that's a whole other discussion. Just wanted to address WebSnyper's comment that yes, while often minuscule, there is some decency among journalists.

And if it keeps haunting either of you Springfield, there is absolutely no shame in seeking a professional to talk to.

^^^^ what he said. If you find yourself in need of someone to talk to, I can put you in touch with someone, a good friend of mine, who is one of our police chaplains. He has much experience with things like this.

    Springfield,
Sympathy to you and your family. I am sorry someone involved you in their personal situation. Thank you for giving your side, and hopefully, it will give others something to think about.

I cannot imagine what this was like for somebody participating in their first shooting experience. From what I have seen, there are almost always several near-beginners in attendance at this range, and I sincerely hope that this obvious fact is something which will be considered by others in this situation, to the extent they are able to rationally process such input.

I’ve been googling since the event to find any sort of news story or mention of it. This thread appeared in the Google search results.

If you look at the responses from the membership I believe you will find just one of the many things about this forum that keeps it rolling along. A solid foundation of good people.
Stick around. Its a great place.

Will do! I appreciate everyone’s responses. It was a crazy day and just being able to talk about it on here has given me an outlet so I appreciate that. My wife is doing pretty well - she was ready to get back in the range when I suggested we go back on Saturday. I think she wanted to show that it wasn’t going to stop her.

The RO’s that have been there when I shoot are top notch. They will not hesitate to kick someone out when they are being unsafe and will not hesitate to help someone if they need help.

    Can confirm.

First jam I ever had with my Walther and the gent there was giving me by-the-book recovery instructions before I even knew what had happened. :yesway:

I wish someone knew who the African American lady was who was in there shooting alone. She was the first one in the range to see what had happened. From watching her shoot she may have been new. She was really shook up. When she came out she looked at my wife and said “Can you just hug me?” She was an older lady..
