I'll admit that my post sounds like cop bashing, but that wasn't my intention.Don't bother calling the police, just take care of that dangerous animal and be done with it. Shoot, shovel, shutup. Calling the law just invites your dog being shot and you having your own gun pointed at you.
I would not have put any of that in purple.

I would have shot it. You have the right to defend your family, yourself and your home.
I would think that covers man, animals, and zombies.
I get coyotes that come into my yard. I also live in town. Marshall here told me I have the right to defend my property from anything. So based on that, next time I see a coyote that's close to my house, I'm shooting it.
It was a possum. Have there been any documented incidents of a normal non-rabid possum attacking a human? I'm sorry, but I just don't see the point in shooting an animal just because it is on your property, even if it is considered a "nuisance" animal.
But I think it would be different if the animal, any animal, attacked. I think the same way if it attacked the family pet.
I think it would have depended on who the responding officer was and the kind of mood he was in.

I didn't read anywhere in the guide that they will attack humans. They are carriers of a bunch of different diseases, whoopty doo. There are a lot of humans out there that are too but we can't just go around shooting them because they are a nuisance animal.
