I don't know if it's been posted already or not, but there are intangibles that go along with a giant min wage bump like this.

If I'm working at Burger King, and I have been there for 3 years and I've worked my way to to $15/hr by being the best employee I can be, how hard am I going to try when the laziest guy in the joint makes just as much money as I do now?

Hush you, with your logic and facts, being all confuse-y and such!

Notice that to accomplish this he had to cut back staff. Gee, I wonder if that will be the case all across the country?

He didn't cut staff. He cut the hours they're working. These are salaried employees. They get paid the same whether they work 60 hours per week or 43. This isn't a zero-sum situation where he has to cut workers to be able to afford to pay the ones left the wages they demand. I know, we all like to see a socialist's plan fail miserably, but we have to admit that this isn't that.

So....how is the work done in those other 17 hours a week going to get done?

Cutting the hours still illustrates the impact of demanding high(er) minimum wages, with the added cherry that these are unionized salary workers in a field where long unpredictable work-weeks are the norm. It's not McDonalds with fixed schedules and opening times and all that. He'; really got the worst of all worlds right now, and it's hilarious.

He actually offered a pay raise awhile back, but union rejected it because the members would make enough money that they would start having to pay some of their own medical insurance. Right now in addition to the not-$15 per hour they are making they get full medical insurance with no premiums, parental leave, mental health benefits, and a gas card to use in the field. These are not really typical minimum wage jobs that people think of when you say "minimum wage".

And his rival whatsername just announce that the min wage should be $20 per hour. What's a Bernie to do?

Heck, I kinda admire the chutzpah of making these employees salaried to avoid paying overtime.

Bernie- he's for the little guy.

Why not just let it rise gradually at a rate consistent with CPI as determined by a non-partisan legislative services agency? OR let the states do it.

If it needs done, he'll need to hire more people, or, go back to making them work more hours. That part, labor vs demand is zero sum. You either work fewer people more hours to get the work done, or you hire more people. The part I said wasn't zero sum is the part where a salaried worker who works purely on salary isn't paid more for more hours worked.

This is actually the funny part of this. While I think it's a bit intellectually dishonest for conservative media to try to make this into the story they really want, the story that it really is, isn't all that favorable for the idea of a $15/hour minimum wage. It's not an hourly wage, it's a salary. They're paid an annual salary for doing a job. It's funny that they're even *****ing about their hourly rate. And it kinda makes me suspicious that they're complaining about Bernie, while other candidates are paying their staffers pretty much the same way and amount. Why Bernie? Why wasn't it the other candidates' staffers complaining? I think they'd all be part of the same union.

HAH! I wish my former job had made me quit working at 40 hours per week.

I guess what surprises me, and is indicative of naivete, is that these people aren't volunteers. It seems like they're just warm bodies rather than uniquely capable strategists and/or policy wonks. Why are they paying them at all

I bring home $28K a year base, cant afford a new truck or high speed internet, but if i told you my hourly wage you wouldnt believe me...surely you bring home more than that!

Every nickel that i make goes to the mortgage and child care.

Tax reduction and controlling insurance penalties would help me a heck of a lot more than a higher wage.

Theyre looking in the wrong spots.

I have an idea for Bernie. He could pay these employees by the hour.

Now wait....if he paid them $8.57/hr and they worked 60 hours a week, due to the overtime, they would make the equivalent of $15/hr for 40 hours of work.

    Problem solved.

$28K per year (take home) isn't that bad.
