No one in my party was going to get shot that day. Never walk in blind.

    How did you know that?

Growing up where and how I did you learn to see people. I mean see them. These guy's were not ready to dump rounds. There was no way they could have hidden a pistol the way they were dressed.
You just had to be there.

I will say this again....we asked politely for them to respect others. They showed disdain for others and threatened us in the theater. We let it slide. They were wanting a confrontation. If they were not waiting for us and again showing disdain for others around them nothing would have happened. Nothing. We did not go all Rambo and hunt them down. They made a scene inside and out. Maybe next time they will think twice about who the PI$$ with.
Yes, I would do it again because I have had enough of this crap.
    Nuff said.....carry on.

I have a feeling there is an old guy in Florida that wasn't used to people not doing what he said. One day he met a complete jerk in a movie theater and neither one was going to cower away . I wonder what they think now...

I've "cut and run" before and can see where I'd do it again. It doesn't bother me one bit. Mid 90's I pull into a supermarket parking lot in Norfolk, VA (nice place!) and as I'm getting out of my car the turd parked next to me puts his cart right up against my car and starts unloading it. I asked if he would move it over a little. His reply was something like "what are you the parking lot police?" It goes from there but he's basically pulling the whatcha gunna do about it attitude. I'm trying to be nice but I'm getting a little wound-up....so, I take a few steps towards the back of his car, a nice long, obvious look at his license plate and look up at him and tell him I don't have time for this and to have a nice day. I turn and walk to the store and do my shopping. He even got in the "you better walk away"line. That REALLY hurt. ;)

I was armed, if I hadn't been I may have let my temper get the better of me. I know, I've seen me do it. To me it's just not worth it over something so trivial when I'm carrying. I don't care what he thinks of me, what he tells his buddy's later that night, and I'll probably never see him again. If I had pushed it what then? Maybe he backs down. Maybe I get into a fight while having to retain my weapon? That makes fighting a little harder. What happens if I lose and during the dancing he figured out I had a gun? Now he has a gun, and that's, ummm, bad. Now I know no one on INGO has ever or would ever lose a fight but statistics show that almost 100% of people going into a fight think they're going to win but nearly 50% of them are wrong. No, really...

Now let's say he's armed and I have to shoot him.. Dead people are not fun at all. The crap that happens after people get dead is not fun. Even if the law has no problems with how it went down you can bet your bottom dollar little Johnny's momma is going to dig out the picture of him at church when he was 10 and find a lawyer. Even if I win that one I lose... a lot.

It's just not worth it to me for what amounts to pride. I already know who I am.

Now had he been waiting for me when I came out with my bacon and orange marmalade......

Well said. Also, if you in any way participate in escalating a discussion into a full on confrontation that escalates into a fight, you likely would not fare well in court if you had to shoot the other person. As I understand the law, you can shoot someone to defend yourself from bodily harm, UNLESS you start the fight. If if a shooting happens and a witness (any of the 4 thugs present are also witnesses) testify that the shooter challenged them with a comment like "we'll settle this later" or any terminology similar to this then self defense plea in court may not be accepted by the jury or judge. I am extra polite if I am carrying, because although I would shoot a thug in a heartbeat if I believe serious bodily harm is going to happen, I really don't want to deal with the bankrupting trial, the risk of loss of personal rights or freedom, conscience bugging me about a shoot and loss of life that could have been avoided, etc. Although in one post sending the family on ahead was part of protecting them, it also eliminated a few witnesses too and left them unprotected if the guys in front of you are texting pics to their buddies of who to attack in the parking lot after a guy just threatened them. There are all types of angles, but yes, I will avoid confrontation at any opportunity if it keeps my family from being harmed, keeps me from having to deal the the global results of shooting someone.

It is entirely possible that this was "Tactical Poporn" that was used in the incident. It's meant to be eaten like any other "ordinary" popcorn so as not to draw attention. But if a confrontation over texting breaks out the tactical popcorn can then be used to blind the assailant giving you time to finish your text.

The gun should never have come out. I doubt he was in fear of his life. The off duty LEO siting next to him had not even stepped in to stop it yet. So I imagine it was not so scary that the gun needed to come out and then be fired.

Just making it clear, I'm not the guy tussleing in the parking lot, that's church and his kid. The quotes are getting messed up in this thread and it's putting the wrong people's names on quoted posts. I walk away from trouble when I can.

Glad you had the restraint to not allow "it" to escalate. Outcome most likely not good for all in concern. And for what?

So do we. When we can.

We even started going to a theater farther north of us to avoid them. (idiots)

As the number of idiots increases daily it gets hard to ignore them.

    Apology for the thread jack.

    Carry on.

From studying shooting incidents from the past year my conclusion is that unless shooting happens inside your house you are going to have a long and expensive process ahead of you. What would I do, I'd ask for my money back, no not a voucher for another movie my money back. I've push this point with the theaters before when one person was doing live translation of the movie to his Spanish speaking girlfriend. Don't take a voucher, they still have your money, get your money back. Maybe if enough people did this they'd start enforcing their rules which are displayed on the screen before the movie starts.

I definately get it. You did not allow the event to escalate, good thing! My question is what happens when law abiding "non-thugs" run out of places to take wife and family or friends out for an innocent evening, outing, shopping, walking the dog or even using a public toilet ? Where does it stop?

Churchmouse, care to share where this theatre is?? I got a hunch based on you sig location... I applaud your handling of the situation as some others have done in this thread... I'm of the same nature to not back down from thugs and low life's... Grew up on a crappy side of Indy and you are right, coming from that background you learn a lot about body language and reading people...

It stops when we as a society stop allowing this to happen. As long as the sheep just walk away the thugs get bolder and bolder. They know it is 5 to 30 minutes for LEO to respond depending on circumstances. Enough time to get away in their eyes.

Sad as it is we have allowed the escalation through gun free zones and a turn the other cheek, hope they go away mentality. Not proposing mob justice just a stand your ground attitude.
Each will respond as they see fit to these things but sheeple will not effect any real change.
    JMHO.

A good point (and for what) and easy to make if you are not involved.

And this is a good point! It's impossible to get the sense of a situation from a short written narrative. At the end of the day a person has to go on how they perceived the situation, then and there.

It's good (I think anyway) to look at situations after the fact like this to see other options and opinions. A little after action assessment is a good thing that everyone can learn from. They tend to be more useful and better received if "you should have" is turned to "this may have". The way I've been taught to do it is: assess, critique, move forward - but don't second guess the guy who had boots on the ground.

    Back on topic:

Something this thread got me thinking about was training in the original situation. I wonder if the Police Captain's extensive training and experience is going to work against him in this. It wouldn't be hard to make a case that he knew better, had been in confrontations before (on the job) and couldn't reasonably have been in fear of his life.

I see some civilians that go to dozens of training classes that are marketed to and geared towards the military and LE personnel, often through the same companies. Anyone think this might effectively be used to sway a jury if it came to that for these folks?

Getting your money back is the only way to encourage the manager on duty to find a pair and enforce the rules. Because the only thing he fears more than confronting an unruly patron is having to confront his boss why there was a cash refund while he was head man in charge.

Would never pull a gun on someone for texting though once I did have to tell a woman to STFU because she was talking extremely loud, lit a lighter to read a book during the movie, and smacked the guy in front of her with her bare feet....AMC 17...SS indy...classy.
