Sounds like mr. comedian will eventually run up against someone without a sense of humor.

    What a dumb bass.

Threatening someone with their life is not a joke. :noway:

The promoter is a fool and should and will be on the hook if something were to run afoul.

Knife Lady kept her cool, probably better than I would have.

Sounds like he's lucky he didn't get shot. -1 for the door guy backing away probably drinks city water with the extra estrogen in it. When you broke down it was the adrenalin burnout it happens to everyone don't worry about your courage you faced the situation just fine, cowards break during confrontation not afterwards. Don't let him get you down file his face under threat images ie wolves, bears, tigers, IRS agents, urban youts etc. react if you see it again aggressively and take the precautions you deem necessary for your safety.

    Hello,

    I was not there.

I would have asked him to put the knife down while creating distance - preferably getting the table between us.

At this point my pistol would have come out. I take it it's not criminal to carry at a show, just not allowed by the rules? Only time I went to a show they disarmed me and I've not been back to one. Regardless, I'm older and wiser and would let them think I was disarmed.

I would have repeated the command to put the knife down and walk away, while taking a knee. (I'm assuming there were people behind him, and I would want an upward angle in case of overpenetration). The gun would have come up and settled in the triangle made by his nipples and top of his manubrium.

For form's sake I would have given him a third warning, then fired, depending on whether he fled.

Some steps may have been left out if the situation escalated more quickly than it's described.

I do not mess around with blades. Properly used, as Shay alludes to, they are more dangerous in a close quarters battle situation than are firearms.

Even if I did not need to fire, the alleged perp and the gunshow host would now be facing criminal and civil charges by yours truly, and I would not be returning to that gunshow.

    My 2 cents.

What a disturbing event! I say disturbing because the "customer" was obviously mentally disturbed/deranged or a bully. Or maybe he was a deranged bully! Maybe he learned a lesson about bullying a lady, and if he didn't, he will one day!

I think KL handled the situation as good or better than I would have, and the feedback has been educational.

I have nothing to add other than I think KL handled it well. It's really a shame that the guy wasn't at minimum asked to leave. Truth is, there should have been a police report written. Goes to show, there are undesirables running around that justify the need for people to protect themselves.

During a gun show while I was behind my tables talking to a door guy a customer approaced one of my tables and picked up one of my fisxed blades and was looking it at in a weird way and also making strage looking faces at the same time. This caught my attention as with the door guy and we both kind of gave each other a look like what is wrong with this guy? The customer then walked over to one of the other tables and picked up another knife and had that same weird look and then asked me this weird question " What would I do if a psycho cmae in and stuck me with this knife" I said "what'? He said what woul you do if I stuck you with this knife? I was stunned thinking did I hear this guy right, is this in his right mind, man this guy sure is wierd , why would this guy ask me that? All of this is running through my head. Then he puts that knife down and walks around to where now he is right in fornt of me and only 2 to 3 feet away. He pikcs up one of my kabars and and asks me again wwhat would I do if he was to stick me ? The door guy then back away from the table a little which made me even more scared. I am thinking man if this man is scared I should take this nut seriously. I knew my gun was in my purse at my feet on the floor. I backed up just a little and pulled my gun out and held it by my side in my hand. He laid the knife down and told me to draw and told me he would stick me before my gun would go off. I never pointed the gun at him at any time. I just wanted him to kow I had a weapon. All I could think of was I need my gun I need to protect myself wagainst this psycho. The promoter came and the guy said he was jsut joking and I and Brad who by then had showed back up at the tables told him that was not funny and you dont joke around any kind of weapons at all. The guy was not asked to leave and was not banned from future shows at this location even though I had a witness that was an employee of the promoters. The door guy said that the customer threatende me with my knife and I felt the need to pull my gun out. Just to let you know it was not so much what he waysing to me but also the look this guy was getting on his face. He went to 2 of my tables and every knife he picked asked me what would I do if he was to stick me with that knife? Why would any man come to a gun show and ask questions like that? I dont find it normal or funny at all. When I saw the reaction fromt eh door guy I felt like I need to respond and quickly and I woudl ahve to defend my self alone to this guy. I carry a gun for self protection and I felt the fear of my life and that is why I pulled my gun out. I would do again. ANytime I fear for my life or that it is threatend in any way form anyone I will pull my gun for protection.
Did I over react? Remember this guy is within 2 to 3 feet of me and with a knife in his hand. He could ahve easily lunged over the table at me and stabbed me. I knew this but I just wanted my gun. I was afraid of this psycho looking guy. I hope this never happens to me again. I also will not tell which show this happened at because it was not the promoters fault and I dont want the show to suffer from any bad publicity at all so please dont ask.

    What say you?
You handled it well. I would have demanded a polkic epresence just in case it ever escalated or if it happens again.

I also would create my own indecent report and asked the door man to do the same. An old saying is records don't lie and liars don't keep records.

Even if no one accepts it the fact that you documented the incident can never hurt you.

Ok...I guess I better give my input on the situation. Unfortunately I was on the other side of the room talking with another dealer when this all went down...I feel a little guilty that I was not there. In my opinion the promoter was wrong in not calling the police and not escorting the guy out and not banning him from future shows. After sleeping on this last night, I had a talk with the promoter this morning. I told him I felt that he did not handle the situation correctly. I told him that the police should have been called and a report should have been made. His response was, "I live here and I know the local police, they wouldn't have done anything". My thought on this was, he was either lazy or didn't want any bad publicity for his show. I then told him I felt he should have made it very clear to the guy that he was banned from any future shows. His response. " I'll just play that one by ear, if he shows up acting crazy then I might not let him in". I'm thinking WTF. So my conclusion is this: Knife Lady and I will no longer be setting up at the TIPTON GUN & KNIFE SHOW!!!!

One thing I will add: I'm very proud of Knife Lady for holding her ground and doing what was necessary to protect herself and I'm thankful that the situation did not esculate into anything worse.

Aren't there police at the show?

No police were present at the time of this incident. I have seen them there before, but usually early in the morning and I'm guessing they are the ones that are hired for security during the night. Usually by mid morning they are gone.

KnifeLady, I am glad you handled the situation the way you did. I'm also happy that Brad did not do something to land in jail.

Right before we left there was a security officer who came in. He had no clue what was going on and the promoter did not call him over to us either but by then the psycho customer was already gone because the show was closed then. Like I said this all happened in the last 15 minutes of the show.

Doesn't surprise me. Tipton is a town with a bunch of "good 'ol boy" types that think nothing bad will happen there. Lots of weirdos too. I think I can say this with some amount of credibility because I did grow up there.

In that very 4H building I had an afterprom where police stopped two local HS whackos who were on there way to the afterprom with guns and bad intentions. These two were also later put in prison for murder.

Anyway... enough off topic, I'm glad you guys are safe and I'm sorry that the people of my home town didn't take care of things like they should. Considering what has happened there before they should have known better.

    KL,

You did good. You passed the test rule which is you are still alive and well. You also passed the second test which is that you were prepared. Then test three, also passed as you kept control of the situation and yourself thereby owning your own future and security which is more than 99.999% of Americans will ever be able to say about themselves.

I could go on and on, but it is enough to say that you did great and should tell yourself that even if you continue to have nightmares or fears. Those you cannot control but in the real world you did control what you had to.

You are what you do when it counts.

    And you proved it.

Rest well, evaluate additional precautions, consider some work with Shay's FOF training as a way to both increase your options in the future and perhaps as a tool to help exorcise some of what is sticking with you. He's a great guy and I am sure he would love to help.

Again, you did good. I would be proud if my wife, or I kept it as cool and controlled.

Sorry you had to go through this Knifelady. You always seem like such a sweet person on the forums.

Here is one person who will never go to the Tipton Gun and Knife Show.
