That's the plan. I am just tired of sending ammo down-range, and not getting any better. I'm planning on doing 1-on-1 handgun lessons with Safe Shotz Home Page My main goal is to become more accurate and consistent, and figure out what it takes to stay that way! I'm clearly missing something (pun intended), and reading and practice don't seem to be helping.

Sounds like you need a trained person watching you shoot and then making correction. The private instruction on the link you provided may do the trick. Let us know.

I've been hitting the dryfire for the last couple of months. It has been inconsistent so the goal is to set a schedule and stick to it.
I'm going to do more live fire practice with a clear goal in mind
When I do get some range time I tend to do the same things
Movement will be the focus of both live and dryfire

My plan is to attend asmany classes (especially any carbine class) as possible. Maybe even out of town ones and making it a mini vacation. Kind of nervous at the same time, but I’m sure that’ll pass.

IMO I dry fire practice A LOT. My girl doesn’t even pay attention to me anymore when I’m practicing my draw and pointing at random objects around the house.

Go go to the range once a month. I currently have a AR, XD 40, and Taurus G2 that I leave with my mom. going to take the XD and AR out and shoot 100rds each. Take moms out at least 3 times out the year.

Welcome to INGO first. Congrats on working to improve. As a man who has owned 3 XD's in .40 in the past and that owns none at this time. Get rid of that piece of **** and find something else. .40 is fine. XD is not. XDM is better. But a run of the mill .40 is no place to be. I know this may seem a little over the top but you need a better sidearm.

I plan to go to the range at last once a month, was not able to accomplish this in 2017. Also planning on entering my first competitive match. Don't really care how well I do, just want to get my feet wet and go from there.

I am not going to tell you what or how to train because I don't know your goals, and I like training as much as (more than?) the next guy, but check this out for some food for thought.

I'm still a bit up in the air for my goals for 2018. Some thoughts on 2017 and carrying that over to 2018.

    Outside of USPSA
I've had a carry permit and an XD subcompact 9 I bought back in 2010 but never carried it. 2017 I made the decision to honestly try to start carrying. Bought a 43 and while I don't love it, it is small enough I don't mind carrying it. Probably have it on me 80% of the time. I don't practice with it much but am proficient with it. I never leave my house without my knife/wallet/keys so I plan to get that same mindset with the pistol. Also would like to take something like Defensive Concepts.

Rifles skills improved in 2017. Index has improved as well as offhand shooting. Didn't do anything real specific except practice transitions in dryfire and some shooting at steel off my back deck. I've got a lot more 223 and 9mm loaded so would like to live fire the AR and PCC more this year.

    USPSA
Goals for 2018 have been the tough one, I'll start off with a review of last year. Goals for 2017 were pretty straight forward and went well. First, Nationals moved out to Utah and I decided to make the trip and place as high as possible. Second, I wanted to finally make GM. To gain additional high level match experience I also signed up for SS Nats and shot 5 other level two matches which included Area 5. I was able to squad with Sevigny at Area 5 and Gutt at the IL sectional which was interesting and helped put some pressure on me. Dry fire practice was pretty spotty. I'd hit it hard for a bit, then take some time off. Live fire was pretty consistent though.

Early on, focus was on gripping the gun hard and snapping my eyes. This helped me make GM in April. Reviewing match performance, it was clear that movement was the lowest hanging fruit. I spent the middle of the year working on decreasing time between shooting positions. Mostly leaving aggressively and having the gun up ready to shoot into position. After Area 5 and IL Sectional, I felt movement had improved but consistency and pts were lacking. Practice then turned to have a strong focus on maintaining aggressiveness but having consistently good pts. Difficult partials were the norm and really focusing on what sight picture/sight movement produced what kind of results.

Ended up 14th at Nationals, 94% of pts. Was very happy with pt consistency. 3 mikes and 1 delta for the match. 2 mikes were on the same tuxedo target both 1/8" away from the A. I called them there but thought they would of been on the line so I moved on. Other mike was on a swinger. Had 360 alpha and Ben had 366. Areas for improvement going into 2018 are makeups on steel and short distance reloads. Only had 5 makeup shots on paper and 3 of those I didn't need. Compare that to the 25 or so makeups on steel. Can probably shave 10 to 15 seconds off my match time if I can significantly reduce steel makeups. It's really a transition issue and stability issue, not a trigger control issue for me. Need to continue working on snapping the gun to the center of the target, having the appropriate sight picture, discipline not to fire when transitions onto and off the steel, and maintaining a solid base when shooting an array of steel (a contributing factor to getting the gun on the center of the target). For the short distance reloads, that's probably an easier one. Start the reload more aggressively, improve hand position consistency grabbing the mag, and looking the mag into the gun / not shifting my focus to the target to early. I stopped practicing after Nationals but focusing on the steel efficiency, I think I only had one steel makeup during the IN Section match.

The other thing I noticed was after making GM, I did not shoot a single drill the whole year except for a week or two before nationals. After listening to a podcast, I realized I had ignored that type of training. Shooting 2R2 and distance changeup, I noticed some glaring weaknesses where my gun handling skills had been neglected so I worked on getting those back to appropriate levels. Also Area 5 burned me on a SHO/WHO stage, which then got me to incorporate some of that in my practice. I think both of those situations helped me perform better at nationals and I will make a concerted effort to keep a variety of drills incorporated into my practice.

Last note, I got my first DQ. Happened at a major match on the second stage. Target was near the 180, I shot it and went into a reload. RO stopped me and said I broke the 180. I still don't think I did but nothing I really could do about it. Pasting the rest of the day while your buddies get to shoot sucks. That taught me that the only judgement on close calls that matters is the ROs. Doesn't matter if you're guilty or not, we don't have instant replay in this sport so I better do everything in my power to make sure there isn't a question and try to remove the judgement from the RO. Coincidentally, there were a couple spots at Nationals which you were put in similar situations. I adjusted my focus to ensure I avoided any close calls. Others weren't so lucky.

So going into 2018, I have an odd desire to mix it up a bit and shoot Carry Optics. I'm too cheap for Open and I think I could improve my transitions and refine my movement with the additional feedback a dot gives you. However switching platforms sets you back on performance and I would like to break into the top 10. I'm not sure if I'll be as dedicated to training in 2018 so it might be a good time to try it. Right now it's a bit of a coin flip. I just picked up the Glock 17 MOS that I won at Nats so I'll probably throw a dot on that. If I like the dot, I'll probably try to compare that to a Q5 Match, a P320 X5, and a CZ or Tanfo that has been slide milled. Then make the jump into what rig I like the best (I don't think gear wins you matches, but if I''m spend a lot of time training, I want to like the equipment I'm using.

Or I might be smart and just keep shooting my beat up Stock II in Production.

Anyone take a class with Stoeger? He's coming to North Carolina in April so I signed up.

Also, Givens is coming to South Carolina the month after, so I'll do that as well.

I took the skills and drills class with Ben. He covers a lot of good info but most of the material is in his books. He'll definitely help you improve. The biggest benefit I get out of training with any high level shooter is listening to their mindset and learning how they approach things. That helps you apply techniques and analyze results to get the most out of your future practice.

    Live fire after church.
450 rounds of pistol through both carry guns, SS gun and Limited gun. It went very well. The focus was on seeing the front sight lift on every shot and that was pretty well accomplished. Shot about 50 rounds through the pump shot gun. Pretty please there as well. Shot six rounds through the truck gun. Did not miss with the truck gun, or the carry guns. Felt as though the dry practice is making a difference. Pleased with the practice session. Did some tough stuff well and at speed.

One run had a Bravo, delta at 30 yards that would have brought a tear to Jake's eye.

Did a fair amount of groups shooting at 30 yards.

Pump shotgun can keep the 00 buck on the target at 35 yards.

What great weather for this time of year and a good day on the range.

I'm going to read the forums and figure out which gear is the latest and greatest, and buy that. :)

I was looking though my Enos range diary looking for notes about some springs, and I saw posts going back a long ways saying things like "I need to start dryfiring again" Has it been that long since I really worked at it? Yea. probably. bet my last serious work was 2013-2014 ish.

Motivation and desire have been in the tank for a long time. Not looking good for '18. Usually by end of Jan all my ammo is loaded for the year, I'm designing stages, thinking about shooting, etc.... this year? haven't even gotten brass all cleaned yet.

Hoping a change up will do something for me... so I'm trying to get the open gun back up to snuff. Maybe something completely different will give me the motivation to work a little. Spent a bunch of money last night on stuff to re-build the mags, new springs in the gun, new diode for the dot, etc etc. It was fun the couple matches I shot with it last fall... until the scope mount screws broke, had a couple of feed issues, etc. Problems get in the way of shooting being fun, so hopefully I can chase away those demons...

can I help you set your goals?

    2018: top 10
    2019: top 5.
    2020: PD champ!

I think shooting a dot is a big teaching tool, personally. If you do mix up platforms, just give yourself plenty of time to get grooved in before any majors. I think switching isn't such a big deal once you get to a certain point, it's just very minor mechanics. Last couple years I shot SS early, then switched back to the glock. Never noticed big difference from trigger or grip angle or any of that nonsense...

Gotta be a combo for me:. LOTS more dry firing, and range time that is more than standing there poking holes in stationary targets. Also, I'd like to find some classes to sharpen up the defensive shooting skills. I live way up in the NE corner and am struggling to find something more than basic safety in the "hours drive" range.

    Live fire after church today.

Shot groups at 30 yards with experimental ammo that I would not trust in a match. Shot through it with stock Glock 17. So if the gun blew up and I did not lose any fingers there would not be any real loss. I got better as the session went on. I want to be better at distance. More work to do.

Put 200 rounds through the Limited gun working on drills with paper at 15 and 25 yards and small poppers at 20 yards. Pretty happy with this work. Hit on paper were solid. Small poppers are the challenge. Had some good runs and some poor ones. The good out numbered the poor.

Royce ran some drills with Walther and did really well.

We shot the AR at 100, 150 and 200 meters. Plenty happy with those results. I did not from a jackass standing braced position. Royce from a jackass seated braced position. He did not miss at 100 meters and only once at 200 meters.

We ran the casino drill. I used the carry gun and the AR. Holdovers are tough at that distance with irons or the scope. I want to get some more reps in on that distance. Because I don't want to make a canoe out of the wrong someones head in a fight in the house.

Royce also timed me on some up drills with the AR. It was ok but a serious close quarters rifle man would have laughed.

Committed to getting better with the rifle and shotgun this year. Took a step today.
