Haven’t hunted long either my first firearm hunt was when they legalized rifles 2 seasons ago so for 2 seasons I hunted with my rem700 in .243 (dropped 2 deer where they stood) in my backyard very small property just a pass through.

this year I am hunting public land during firearm and will be taking my .458 socom :D have been trying to trade stuff for a .357 lever or m77 but haven’t had much luck.

Rossi .44 mag lever rifle, Redhawk in .44 mag, Remi 870 w/rifled barrel and CVA Wolf in .50 for BP season. When I use a long gun , I also carry an old Blackhawk in .357. I have yet to take a deer with the Redhawk, but I'll keep at it.

Out back of the house or if I go south of the big creek I'll use my Tikka T3x in 6.5x55 with 140gr handloads or a Swede M96 or 96/38 with PPU 139 SPs or a VKT M39 with 170 gr SP handloads. If I decide to wander into the HNF it'll be a 44 mag Marlin.

I started with a 870 Express 12 ga and Sluggers. Around 2000, I bought an Original Knight Disc 50cal. Once I got that, I have only carried a shotgun a couple of times. I shot bows and muzzleloaders only. Several years ago I got a CVA Accura on clearance once they came out with speed breech upgrades. When I got married, I started adding other options for my wife and stepsons. Here is what we use. No specific order.

    Rem 783 - .243 - Hornady 100 gr BTSP handloads
HandiRifle - .44 mag - Hornady 225 gr FTX handloads
    Tri-Star Viper youth - 20 ga - TBD
S&W 629 4" - .44 mag - Hornady 240 gr XTP handloads (carry gun while hunting. would love to shoot a deer with it though!!)
Knight Disc - 50 cal - 260 gr Speer JHP w/ MMP jackets and 100 gr White Hots
CVA Accura - 50 cal - 245 gr PowerBelt HP and 100 gr White Hots

Are both of those 458 SOCOM? If so, do you prefer to carbine length or mid length gas system? RRA appears to have discontinued the mid length, which is what I thought I wanted...

    Yep. I have no preference.

At the time, I took what I could get. RRA was months out so I picked both up here on the classifieds. Got the middy first. Then heard of people having all kinds of trouble with them. The only reliable source of ammo I had at the time was a guy that did the local gun show circuit. His loads all used A1680. Had some trouble cycling with both of RRA's supplied recoil springs in the middy. Went to a standard spring, problem solved. When I started loading my own, I just stuck with the same recipe as I was getting from the gun show guy. Both rifles cycle it just fine and it kills deer really, really dead.

As a kid, a Mossberg 500 20 GA with a rifled and sighted slug barrel.

These past several years, a Ruger GP100 stooked with 170 grain cast from Buffalo Bore...I've had to be picky with my shots, but I've never had to track/trail a deer yet...it just works!

If I'm hunting my stand with long distance potential I'll be using the 308 with 165 gr handloads from the ruger. If i go to my thick woods stand the
ole marlin lever in 45/70 throwing 405 gr lead reloads. I'm covered....
