I hope to go deer hunting for the first time this year.

    I have a Marlin 44mag lever gun

I haven't decided on what rounds to use.

If I take the time to put any in the freezer it will just be backyard.
Maybe use the mag spark for better weather proofing, either lubed lead or paper patched.

Oh gosh I hope I don't tag another one that way.

Once upon a time was sitting around the dinner table, me, Dad, my brother, bottle of Bushmills. Talking hunting and cartridges. I regaled them with the tale of last years kill on a dirt road outside of Dripping Springs, Texas. How a pickup went past and the deer came out behind the pickup and then I dropped her.
    Dad asked, "What with?"
    "My '86 model".
    "'86 model what?"
    "Toyota."

You can tell when the ruts on. Start seeing them running around the neighborhood in the middle of the afternoon and dead ones line the roads.

If I may make a suggestion.
I just used a Marlin 1894 lever action .44mag with great success yesterday and today.
Yesterday I took a smaller doe, and today I took a very respectable 9 point buck.
Doe was taken at about 50 yards, the buck at about 70 yards.
Both were taken with Sellior & Bellot 240gr JSP.
They went where they ere supposed to, and did the job intended.

They work well in the Marlin 1894.

I appreciate you offering your advice. As I have no experience with hunting (save for a fun but failed squirrel hunt).

I am happy to read any advice one would offer.
Of I may ask are you running a scope on your Marlin?

I find that I'm a respectable shot with a rifle. So I'm not in a hurry to add one. However if you have a scope you are particularly happy with, I would certainly take a look.

I am running a scope, but a very inexpensive one, and it works just fine.
The scope I have on my Marlin is a Simmons 8-point 3-9x50 with a duplex reticle.
I think I paid around $45 for it and sighted it in using a cartridge style laser bore-sighter.
It could not have been easier, and I'm happy with the results.

    I wish you lusk.
