I go back in time and I hand John Moses Browning a high-end laptop with the latest engineering software.

I do not know what kind of firearm that he will make, but I know it will always work AND it was have no moving parts.

No, actually we have to be bombarded with the 'Believer' version including all of the above.

The Bible gives no specific date (like the 25th of December), just what was going on around "Mary & Joseph" and why they were traveling.
"Mary & Joseph" on the way for Roman Census, middle of March, or 'Ides Of March'
"Shepards In The Field", the only time shepards stay in the field is birthing season, end of April/Beginning of March.

"Mary & Joseph" were middle eastern Jews, before plastic surgery, so they would look like middle eastern Jews.
    Common sense on that one...
Yeah, you know I'm with you... all the made up stuff bothers me too. I cringe every time I see "white baby Jesus" with snow falling.

Anymore discussion should move over to the Christian thread.

    This ^^^.

As I say, I am content. I have studied a lot of history and believe everything you feed into ancestry sites is so LDS can baptize you and them.

But, I am enjoying to see what others are saying. The attempted/partially effective thread jack needs purged.

In this game of staying as long as we want, and potential mental scarring I would assume that the knowledge gained would also 'stick'. I would go back to the library of Alexandria and stay as long as it took to catalog all the information before it was razed. Then I'd bring back that knowledge and rebuild it.

I'd like to watch a week's worth of lectures at Cornell by Carl Sagan

Listen to Edgar Allen Poe recite some of his work.
    .

Good ones. Especially the library. That was a HUGE loss to humanity.

Sorry the 1911 didn't work when it went to production. Don't worry. V3.1 will finally get it right.

    - Gettysburg- I had an uncle who was a Confederate General at Gettysburg. He made it through the battle, but not the war.

    - The debate over the Declaration of Independence- Sitting in Independence Hall and taking it all in.

    - Pearl Harbor

    - A Dodge dealership in 1969- Must have been something to see back then.

    - JFK inauguration.

    - 9/11 in NYC.

    - My dad when I was younger.

I would go back and spend some time with relatives I have lost.

I would like to witness when Moses parted the Red Sea during the Exodus from Egypt.

Gettysburg and Normandy flashed thru my mind but I reconsidered. Pickett's charge and Omaha Beach were basically a slaughterhouse. Watching it would change most people. It is a dark curtain that can't be put back once you remove it. It seems some can witness it without issue and some are never the same.

I thought about Hiroshima, but then thought, I really would not want to see that.

Easter being yesterday, I think being a witness to the Last Supper, passion, death, and resurrection of our Lord would certainly deepen one's faith.

It made the believing witnesses run and hide for 50 days until they were imbued with power from on high.

I contemplated D-Day, Pearl Harbor and a few other notable events like them. But for the same reasons you listed, I passed. Saving Private Ryan was enough for me.

I would follow a few who have disappeared. Amelia Earhart, Hoffa, D.B. Cooper to name a few. My reasoning is I could tell my grandkids stories around a campfire sometime and if the mystery is ever solved, they would wonder how in the heck Grandpa knew that.

Man would this be so cool. Even just having the opportunity to observe so many critical events in human history would change your life.
I have personal life events id also choose but for the sake of discussion ill just list some historic events. Not in any order of importance or time.

The vikings discovering north america (see if it happened)
    First thanksgiving
    First shot of the revolution.
    Kennedy assasination.
Lincolns gettysburg address & the speech he gave off the balcony of the white house mentioning giving Blacks the right to vote (ensuring them their right).
Return of the first men to walk on the moon
    Surrender of lee to grant
    Surrender of the japanese
    Hitler escaping to south america

    Surrender of the japanese

My best friend's dad (he died in '68) was a captain in the US Navy. He had the assignment of being escorted into Tokyo by the Japs, after the Japanese surrender, and he was the officer who got to take down the Nazi flag, or at least presided over the removal of the flag, at the German embassy in Tokyo.

For years his father used it as a carpet in his living room. He once took it to a dry cleaners to have it cleaned. At first they refused until he explained who he was and how he came to have it, and what he was using it for. Then they were glad to clean it for him.

My buddy still has the flag!

Trial, crucifixion and burial of Christ (and of course to see what happened three days later).
Giza plateau, Egypt, to witness the building of the pyramids and see if aliens really id help out.
Speaking of which, 1947, Roswell, NM to see what really did crash there.
Debate and signing of the Constitution.
July 20, 1944, Wolf's Lair, Poland...even though I can't interact with the people, it would still be fun to scream at Stauffenberg to place the bomb on the other side of the table leg

Too bad we can't interact with the people and change history. There's a whole bunch of John Connors in history I'd like to see terminated.

Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Woodrow Wilson, Saul Alinsky...

There's only one thing that comes to mind, with any urgency at least, when I think of what I would do with a time machine...

My dad was born in a literal mud hut in one of the most historically impoverished regions of the world. He was the first person in my paternal bloodline to ever get educated. Both of his parents, who died before I was born, were uneducated and illiterate. Totally illiterate. Could not even write their own names.
After reading lessons, when my dad's 6 siblings were helping with farm duties, my dad would come home and share with his dad (my grandpa) what was taught at school that day. Eventually, motivated by my grandpa's deteriorating health, my dad slowly taught his dad how to read.
Sometimes, when I feel like half-assing a class assignment, or basically any time I feel lazy, I think about that simple fact. My father...taught his father...how to read.

If I had a time machine I would just go and sit there. See my grandfather who my dad speaks so highly of. Watch my dad teach him how to read.

One of the themes in Sci-Fi, is the major events are INDEPENDANT of the individual.
In other words, kill Hitler, and someone else just fulfills the role.
Kill off Oppenheimer, and someone else leads the group that comes up with the 1st atomic bomb.
Kill off Churchill, and someone else leads the Brits to victory.

Of course, being time travel, it's just a scenario.
