It is conceivable that this stance would produce a better outcome for most people shooting competition or even in a live self-defense situation. As with anything else in life, change takes practice in order to perfect. I changed how I use slings after Appleseed and it worked, but I had to practice. I changed my handgun grip after reading input from one of of Hickman's threads and it worked much better.

This particular style is very uncomfortable for me and I've tried several times. I don't shoot three-gun competitions and I like the feel, comfort, support, and accuracy I achieve with the use of a sling, so I will stick to it. However, I've seen many people use this style and use it well, so it can't be wrong, just different.

Travis Haley and Chris Costa made this offhand grip fashionable

Get out those parachute pants and head to the range!

There's a brand new stance, but I don't know the name.

We are the cool kids and we're coming to town.

As a result of my deep fear of being made fun of, there's no way that I'm going to tell you that I use the same stance (legs and feet) with a rimfire rifle that I do with a pistol for Steel Challenge.

    Oh !@#$, I just did.

These relate mostly to using an AFG, but they may also be helpful to the OP.

Wow, I was not expecting that. My post was not meant to bash the grip, just to get educated on it (although my initial thought was "stupid"). I will however be putting one of those AFG's on my saiga and trying it out. If it doesnt work on that, ill try the AR, but I think it might help for clay shooting with the saiga.

Not a new idea; the far forward grasp with (hyper)extended support arm has been widely used in competition shooting circles for what, almost 10 years now? More recently, the guys from Magpul Dynamics have helped to popularize its use among the "tactical" shooting crowd. It works, but only when the rifle is set up to accommodate it.

As someone in the first couple of posts said, it's the new "hotness" LOL. Someone always has to come up with something to differentiate themselves from the crowd. Auto vs. Revolver, thumbs up vs. thumbs down grip, isosceles vs. weaver, etc. etc. I do agree that I am seeing a lot of these grips showing up on rifles but I don't think people know the concept behind them just that they buy them because everybody else is.

For sure. I've seen lots of folks running carbines with short handguards, with the AFG mounted all the way at the back of the rail (basically next to the magwell). Totally defeats the purpose of the product.

Totally agree with the misuse of the product. It's a dead giveaway to spot what we used to call a "PX Ranger", more recently called a "mall ninja." I shoot with this grip and have progressed from the around the handguard hold, to the magwell hold, to the vertical front grip, to the AFG with the thumb over the top and arm extended. I find that it's great for multiple target engagements. I use it with a one point sling with no problems.

The best way that I've found to explain this grip to critics is to have them hold a long, round object similar to the way you'd hold a rifle. A broomstick works well. Now swing the "rifle" from target to target as if you were engaging them. Take note of the lag or extra motion created by the object in wanting to continue in its path. Now do the same with the extended support hand. You should notice considerably less need in the object to travel in its given path.

As with anything I introduce people to, I don't say this is "the" way, just a way. Call me a Magpul fanboy if you'd like, but it works for me. :D

Well I havent got to shoot with this hold yet, but I have tried the hold to feel it out, and I can definitly see where doing it properly, with a rifle properly set up, could have its benefits. But I can also see where it wouldnt work for some people at all with long arms, really short sbr's and things of that nature.

I also shot in a LEO 3 gun a few weeks back where one of the scorekeepers was also a trainer. I can't remember his name or what company he worked for. He was opposed to this style because he said it put too much of your body away from center and it would greatly inhibit your ability to maintain balance if engaged up close. I can definitely see that in it as well. Nothing is 100% though. Just have to find your niche I suppose.

Keep in mind that Haley and Costa's overall shooting style incorporates a lot of dynamic movement and their base is typically pretty wide.
