Keep in mind, Rick and his group started the WHOLE thing. Rick tried to strongarm the Hilltop, and then thought he was going to strongarm the Sanctuary. If Rick hadn't been so arrogant, and so eager to prove that he was top dawg, he, in theory could've avoided this situation. Sure, the Saviors are bad, but Rick didn't really know that. He was taking the word of the People at Hilltop, and went on what can only be described as a murderous campaign against them. Shouldve got some intel, shored up defenses at Alexandria, and stayed put.

There is no way they could've avoided conflict with the Saviours. Negan controls the whole area. It was gonna come pretty soon. However, better intel gathering before jumping into action may have given them a better chance of success with less cost. War was coming, no doubt, but our group just hasn't learned how to act proactively yet. They always seem to get into trouble first, then react. They had no clue of the numbers they were going up against.

    Digging in is bad.
    Good for the short game.
Yes, he did need to do more recon. And work on tactics.

As for "unprovoked", they witnessed a "demonstration of power" when they guy had to stab the hilltop leader to save someone.

    Outside the coup
Their world certainly did get a WHOLE LOT BIGGER! I enjoyed seeing Rick go into shock as he ate his words. He became the bully and ran into a tougher one. :):

If it follows the comic book then we haven't seen anything yet. I finally got caught up on them this past weekend and finished the most recent one early this morning. There is a lot more to come (said in a 'whisper'). The new boarder markings are brutal and will really upset the masses if it plays out the same.

I hate cliffhangers to the next season. In fact, it makes me not want to watch the show anymore. It's insulting to the loyal viewers to play those kind of games to boost ratings for the future season premier.

That's exactly how my wife feels. She said if they have to do that to try to get and keep viewers then she is out, done with this show. I agree too, but I must admit I'm getting tired of the plot/story line being recreated over and over with every season. Its getting old.

The shows creator said "it was a beloved character the died" That rules our Coral.

    My guess, Glenn.

I'm starting to think Glenn too. Which after ALL the crap they put us through with his first "death," it would be a HUGE letdown if they did. I'll watch the first episode of next season. If it's him, I'm done. If they pull this type of cliffhanger stunt again, I'm done. I've been loyal to these *******, so I'm not up for their crap.
They should take their cues from GoTs. They know have to end a season.

Rick doesn't have his **** together enough to patrol, run skirmishers/scouts on the road, or get off the road and control the flanks when they run into roadblocks. I would go to work for Negan, he seems to have his act way more together.

This. Everybody ran off in separate groups with different goals, because Rick doesn't have any control.

These are days of warlords. That's like a promotion.

The big brass of the TWD did a big disservice to the crew and fans with this cheap trick.

Negan said it took 15 hours to shoot the final seen. The cast looked beyond despair and Negans monologue was great introduction of a new character.

Then on the Talking Dead the producer smuggly says this is the end of this story and we will be telling a new story next season.

No. It was a cheap unnecessary slide of hand.

I can't understand the massive amount of anger over "just another cliffhanger". It's what TV has done for decades. If you watched last night's show hoping for closure, then you need to stop watching the show. If you need closure, search for the spoilers. They're out there. Have I searched for them? No. Sorry, I agree with what the producer said.

Btw, it's "sleight of hand". ;)

End of season cliffhangers are tiresome and cheap. I've stopped watching other shows at least partly for that reason.

It's particularly annoying when the show gets canceled before the cliffhanger is resolved. That won't happen with TWD, but it has happened to other shows.
