    A fair question.
Paying with a credit card doesn't give the store a load of personal info like a driver's license does.

Actually it does. Ever wonder why, if you have a reason to call your credit card company, that you have to give the last 4 of your SSN? It has more info than a DL does.

There are a lot of assumptions being made here. Does anyone actually know what is stored? As a person who has been charged with investigating various crimes that have occurred at grocery stores, I've seen some data collected from rewards cards and the like and it is useless in determining ownership, I've tried. Sometimes they might store a last name and maybe a year of birth and email. If information is stored, it typically is severely truncated. Many businesses don't want to be responsible for storing sensitive info unless they absolutely have to.

^^^ This is the proper use of a "Denny".^^^

This... without a privacy policy indicating how they use that specific data, one has to assume it is being stored and not in a protected method, etc.

Making the assumption that it is not being stored without something stating that is also just that... an assumption.

I'm checking this out now: https://www.kroger.com/topic/privacy-policy-7 it may or may not contain any answers on the specifics of scanned DLs.

    Edit: Seems it does: https://www.kroger.com/topic/how-we-collect

    All pretty standard stuff. :dunno:

Yes, the credit card people have my personal info, just like my bank does.
But the store I'm using the credit card at doesn't get a download of all my personal info into the store's database when I use the credit card.

We'll likely never know until they lose it. The concern is that they can take all of it and you seemingly can't say no unless you choose to take your $$ and business elsewhere.
Ah, so no one has asked. There is no SSN, CC, bank account info downloaded from your DL. What is this secret data that Kroger will deny collecting when asked?

I have related this before, but it is worth repeating in this context. My wife and I recently went on a trip, and we were looking at hotels to stay at along the way. I was on my computer looking at Google Maps to decide which hotels were located convenient to where we wanted to stop for the night. My wife was on her computer to make the reservation since she gets better deals due to her frequent business travels.

The instant she made the reservation, my Google Maps suddenly showed that I was staying at that particular hotel on that particular night. The one and only thing that linked us together was that we both have the credit card she used. I am not listed on her hotel club membership, I was not named on the reservation she made, nothing else. The credit card alone was enough to link me to the reservation in Google Maps in real time.

Example 2: My wife and I recently went on another trip to Europe. I called one of my credit card companies to let them know I would be traveling and to ask them to add a note to my file. It wasn't necessary. They already knew everywhere I was going to be and when I was traveling. This was in spite of the fact that I hadn't actually used this particular credit card to make any reservations. It didn't matter, buy anything with one, and they all know it the instant it happens.

Example 3: I frequently grocery shop at Meijer, and pay with a credit card. I routinely get coupons in the mail from them for the items that I purchase the most. These are coupons specifically tailored to the things I actually buy, not just random stuff. I am not a member of their club or anything, the credit card alone does the trick.

If you use a credit card on any purchase, you have given up far more info than is on your driver's license.

Yeah, but you dress like Bill Nye (per your own admission). :stickpoke:

No - he dresses like me.

Actually, think more like Sen. Paul Simon, or Alton Brown.

Or maybe don't just buy adult beverages, but buy "adult" beverages - leave the Zima, Jack Daniels, and Budweiser on the shelf and put Campari, 12 y.o. rhum, and Laphroaig in your cart.

But the data are personally identifying, and if being retained, can be tied to CC or other financial data through the loyalty program/online ordering data.

Data do not exist in a vacuum - especially when companies intentionally collate as much data as they can get their hands on, for marketing and other purposes.

Sooooo, has anyone found out what information Kroger grabs off the barcode?

According to their form, they have until COB today to reply. I get the feeling I'm going to have to call and follow up.

I never claimed super sensitive secret data like SSNs were captured. Where in my letter do I reference any of the above that you are implying? ANY data beyond the DOB is too much. Period. Ad the only way to guarantee they dont get more is to not allow access to the barcode.

Do you have the other info somehow covered when you show them the front of your license?

They don't need to collect that either. They are only required to verify one is over the age of 21 to sell alcohol. There is no reason to record or capture the actual birthday date.
