      Finishing a handle

I just found an old CVA Knife kit that I had bought years ago before moving. It looks like a good project for an old guy. What king of finish works best for ease and durability for walnut? I thought of varnish, epoxy, soaking in linseed oil and ran out of ideas at that point. Is there any...

      Need info about Kel-Tec 2000

I heard you can use Beretta magazines in 9mm with the 2000 carbine. Does it take a modification? Does that mean the double stack for the Model 92? I bought extra magazines to send to my grandson in Afghanistan and got wondering about the 2000 for me using the same magazines. Thanks to anyone...

      Bat House

I bought a bat house to put up. Has anyone else here done anything similar for insect control? I used to have some shag bark hickories they crawled under the bark on, but had to cut them down when we built the house.

      Giving something back

Forty five years ago when my offspring were kids we used to take half a dozen seedlings (usually apple seedlings) with us on vacation and plant them in various parks or farmers woodlot fringes (with their permission). I’m just wondering if any of you try to plant any old variety...

      Marlin Survival Rifle

Seems like I'm always a day late or a dollar short or sometimes both. I just became aware that my first pick as a survival rifle is being made after several years absence. The "Marlin Papoose" was made up and a batch marketed through Davidsons. I have never found one on the open market and it...

      Canada might end registration

Tories move closer to killing gun registry OTTAWA–Gun-control advocates say they are horrified and fearful that Canada's long-gun firearms registry is on the verge this week of being scrapped because the Conservatives may have enough support from the opposition to kill it. Wendy Cukier...

      Barter the day after

Think twice about bartering something that can be returned to you from 100 yards away. Bartering ammo that might be shot back isn't good. My place is the assembly point for my family. It's 30 miles though so it could take them a few days to get here. Wood stove. Neighbor has a backhoe to dig...

      What would work?

What would work after an EMP attack? How about the old style mini-bikes that ran with what appeared to be a lawnmower engine. Not fast or load carrying but definitely a way to get from here to there. How about an old engine style to run a well pump? What kind or manufacturer? So many things...

      EMP Protection

Maybe one of you electrical engineers can straighten me out on this. I read at one time that you could protect something like a C/B or AM/FM or small ham radio by sandwich style packaging. Radio on the inside - next a box - next a total wrapping of aluminum foil - next another cardboard...

Could you and your wife live this way?

Simpler for survival. YouTube - Pioneer Couple Got to admit the climate is a little different, but this is what I was referring to in simpler living. No electricity, no pickup etc. :)

Where to get brass plating done?

Anybody know a place where it can be done reasonably? We have a large wall hanging Caboose Lamp which after 25 - 30 years of cleaning is showing wear on the plating. It's brass plating on steel and some steel is showing and rusts a little. The reflector part is probably 20" in diameter. :dunno:

      If I ever

Get to try knife making I think what I would like is a shape similar to those made in the movie "The Hunted" with Tommy Lee Jones. I think "Cold Steel" used to offer one similar called the "Warthog". I think it had a 1/4 Inch thick blade. Of course if I make it with my lack of skill it will look...

      Preparedness and the Flu

With flu in pandemic proportions anyone who doesn't stock up on staples just isn't thinking. You don't want to be forced to go out in crowds because you need a can of beans and with quarantines a very real possibility, being prepared is more important than ever.

      Water Well Caveats

Location for your shallow well, or even putting one down at all might be a consideration of your location. In my case, I live at a lake which has had a cottage on it, in one location, since 1890. The well was always in one location out side the house, and finally in about 1945 had an addition...

      People powered stuff.

People powered tools can be bought from Crosscut Saw Company . For non-electric things you can check Lehmans.com . They specialize in Amish type appliances, tools, lighting etc. etc. A couple of years ago I bought a people powered (Hydraulic ram) log splitter. While not as fast as a gas...

      Landscape lighting inside

A power outage and/or a SHTF situation leaving everyone with zero lighting shows how visual our senses are oriented. Even reaching to touch something is aided by reaching the right direction. Those little solar powered accent lights which are so dim they can almost go un-noticed in the yard...

      357 Maximum getting close

My gunsmith called and said my rifle (Rossi Single Shot) is now rechambered to 357 Maximum. He won't release it to me till he proof fires (Sensible precaution) so I'm still looking for a couple of rounds of ammo for the test. I ordered some from Reeds Ammo in Ok. City, but might be another 6...
