There is a ton of resources out there, and one could very well be here on INGO! There are a LOT of top-tier builders posting videos on YouTube and on other forums. There are also some forums dedicated to 80% builds, though I am not familiar with them.

Where does one go to learn how to make a 1911..? The process is so cool. Having one you made on your own out of 80% would be awesome

Beyond acquiring the skills to do this is the fact the tooling involved is seriously spendy. Unless you intend to build more than a few it is not a sound investment.

A good 1911 is an addicting thing. If I had the tooling along with the skill and time to produce this level of work, I'd go broke building myself a different 1911 for every day of the year.

Working over the slide a bit before I get back to fitting the frame and the grip safety... The stripper rail was straight and flat, which was good. It only took a few passes with a light file and some stones to remove the machine marks (which are not easily seen in the picture). The rail will be polished to a mirror shine prior to finishing.

I already checked the condition of the breech face when I received the slide, so I knew that it was square and to spec. I polished off the bead blasting to nearly a mirror finish. I will give it some more attention prior to fitting the barrel. The most important thing is to not remove a lot of material and to make sure you keep the breech face square.

It is hard for me to imagine a "more" mirror finish on that surface. But, I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like!

I have enjoyed watching this project. I thought I knew what it took to build a 1911 -- nah, I had no clue.

Waiting for new posts on this thread is like waiting on Christmas as a kid.
